John Sutherland Obituary

John Tom

SUTHERLAND

Tom Sutherland, 74 passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of July 9, 2009 surrounded by family. Tom was born on August 8, 1934 to JT and Eliza (Jane) Sutherland in Mount Sterling, KY. Tom attended Mount Sterling High School where he excelled in baseball, football and basketball. He obtained his pre-med undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama and his Doctorate of Podiatric Medicine degree from Illinois College of Podiatry. He served as a proud member of the United States Army from 1954-1957. In December 1954 he married his high school sweetheart Bettye Brown and they remained inseparable for the last 55 years.

In 1966 Tom and Betty moved their family to Reno where Tom started his Podiatry practice until retiring in 1996. Tom's greatest joys were watching his kids and grandkids sporting events, it wasn't uncommon at basketball games to hear him before you saw him. He enjoyed swimming and wrestling with all the grandkids at the family pool, and was always in for a good time. He will always be remembered for his kindness, humility and dedication to his family and friends. Tom was a member of the Executive Association of Reno, The Reno Tennis Club and the Podiatry Association of Nevada.

Tom was preceded in death by his father and mother, JT and Jane Sutherland, his sister Nancy Scott Gilbert, brother RD Sutherland and his son Jeff Sutherland. He is survived by his wife of 55 years Bettye Sutherland, sons David Sutherland, (Diana) of Reno, John Sutherland, (Cindy) of Reno, nephew John Bob Gilbert of Atlanta, GA, grandchildren, Jordan, Erica, Sam, Egan and Aidan Sutherland.

Special thanks to Freddie Galang for the wonderful care provided, Kim Brenay and Saint Mary's Hospice for their support and guidance and to the Nevada Alzheimer's Association.

Memorial services will be held at the Mountain View Mortuary, (4th and Stoker) on Tuesday, July 14 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers please send donations to Nevada Alzheimer's Association.

Dear Bettye,

I cherish the memories of Tommy, who was a marvelous person. You two had a long marriage, and that is a monument to each of you. I give thanks to God for Tom and all of the Sutherland family who enriched our lives at First Baptist, Mt. Sterling.

Please know that I am lifting you up in prayer as I write. I know that God will uphold you--and I know, too, that the road ahead will be lonely.

Celebrate the good and ask God to carry the sorrow with you.

When you are in touch with Fay, please give her my regards. Thank you.

Affectionately,
Claire Cohen

Bettye Gay and family:

Janice and I were saddened to learn of Tom's passing. You both have been very close personal and dear friends and we enjoyed our visit with you a few years ago, Tom and I were old buddies from as far back as grade school and I watched him play everything for the Mt Sterling Trojans in the '50's. Bettye you are a very strong person and have taken good care of him for many years. We extend our deepest sympathy to you and David and John and other family members. Tommy will always stay alive in my memory. We send our love and pray that the Lord will give you added strength at this time.

Our Love.

To Bettye and Family,

Zane and I send our deepest sympathy to all at this time of loss. You and Tommy were among our oldest and best friends when we all lived in Mt. Sterling and we shall never forget those days. May the Lord give you strength and sustain you in the days ahead.

Bettye,

My deepest sympathy from the Anders family.
Tom was the most honest man I have ever met in my life.
When I purchased his practice in 1996, it was the most pleasurable experience.
I have to thank Tom for bringing me to Reno. Our family has enjoyed living here and it was Tom who brought us here.
Thank you.
Derek Anders, DPM.

Our thoughts and prayers to all the family. Tommy was a classmate of ours from the 1st thru 12th grade. He was a great player for the purple and gold TROJAN'S of MSHS. We will always remember the fun times we had in school, along with Betty by his side.
Sincerely, Lucy and Buddy
