Mark Smith Obituary

Mark Hayes Smith

- - The family of Mark Hayes Smith, with heavy hearts, announces his peaceful passing surrounded by his loved ones on October 12, 2018 from complications of ALS. Mark, "Smitty", was leader in the Northern Nevada coaching community and a retired Washoe County School District special educator. His passion was working with special needs students, as well as coaching football and track.

Mark was born in Roseburg, Oregon on June 28, 1956 to Garrett and Barbara Smith. His desire and gift for teaching those with special needs started early, following in the footsteps of his father, who started a swim program for the handicapped. Mark went on to play football for the Oregon State Beavers and earned two master's degrees. His passion for coaching and teaching led him to Reno, NV where he met his wife, Deanne, and spent over 28 years as a special educator and adaptive P.E. specialist for WCSD. His connection, compassion, and interest in the special needs community led him to pursue involvement in several local organizations and projects, including the "I Can Bike" camp and the "Buddy Walk".

Coach Smitty, as he was known to all, had a strong presence in the coaching community and coached both football and track and field for over 30 years. In 1989 he joined the Wooster football coaching staff and immediately became a vital piece of the Joe Sellers era. From 1989-2018 he influenced and guided numerous athletes in football and track and field, coaching at Wooster, Manogue, Reno, Galena, and Virginia City High Schools. In March 2018 he was proudly honored with his induction into the NIAA Coaches Hall of Fame, and in May 2018, he was also inducted into both the Wooster Hall of Fame and the Northern Nevada Track and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Coach Smitty was a three time Northern Nevada Coach of the Year for Track and Field.

Mark had many other interests including family travels, gardening, fitness, UNR basketball and football games, and most of all, golfing with his son Luke. He will forever remain in the hearts of his loving family and those who had the opportunity to know him. His smile and enthusiasm for life will be sorely missed.

Mark is survived by his wife of 25 years, Deanne, son Luke, daughter Amy Weyhenmeyer (Tyler), mother Barbara Lee, brother Garrett Smith, and sisters Jamie Hennessey, Stephanie Kilburn, and Barbara Jackson (Steve). He was preceded in death by his father Garrett Smith and stepfather Chloe Lee.

A private cremation and interment will be held. The celebration of life is scheduled for November 18 at 11am in the Wooster High School gym. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Nevada Center for Excellence in Disabilities-I Can Bike Camp, checks payable to Board of Regents with NCED bike camp on comment line. Mail to: UNR-NCED, Mail Stop 285, Reno, NV, 89557.

Here's to one of the most gifted educators I have ever known. Mark embodied the very best of our profession. He truly loved and believed in his students and set the bar high. His effort and passion brought joy and quality of life to his students and their lives were forever changed in those moments with him and beyond. It was a privilege and a pleasure to watch Mark teach, the likes of which I am sure will be difficult if not impossible to replace. His kindness and generosity of spirit will be missed in our community and I am a better person for having had the honor and privilege of knowing Mark Smith and working with him. Many prayers and heartfelt condolences of love are said on this special day of remembrance for our dear Smitty and his entire family.

I taught with Coach Smitty at Wooster many years ago. As we both moved on I would see him at school a few times a year and he always acted like we had just seen each other. You couldn't miss that smile! I enjoyed his energy and positivity. He always had time to give you a big hug and say hello. I know he helped and touched many students during his career. I am so sad to hear that he is no longer with us. I'm glad I met you! I feel so sorry for his family at this sad time. My condolences.

Smitty and I were roommates in college and then again after college. He was a groomsman in my wedding. We had lost contact for several years but were able to connect again in 2010. He was a very special person in my life and somebody whom I will never forget. Peace to his wonderful family.

I played college football with Mark and was a roommate of his for 1 year in college. He played football and lived his life with "passion" back in those days, and it sounds like his passion never left him. I was blessed to know him.

Smitty was one of the most loved coaches I have ever known. I coached track with him many times and athletes from all opposing schools respected and asked for his advice and knowledge, which he loved to share. He had a genuine love for life and shared it with all young people who were lucky enough to get close to him. He will be hugely missed as he was a great friend, mentor, leader, coach and more. He seemed to always be happy to be wherever he was.

I met Mark when we were 12 years old and continued through to high school graduation. He was a "class" act the entire time I was aquanted with him. It is apparent that he continued being this type of person the remainder of his life.

My condolences to his family.
