Melva Howell Obituary

Melva Ann Lynch

HOWELL

Melva was born to James F. Lynch and Elsie Peterson Lynch in the Elko General Hospital in Elko, NV on October 9, 1936. She was educated in the Elko schools and graduated from Elko County High School in 1953. She then attended Westminister College in Salt Lake City, graduating in 1958.

Upon receiving her teaching credentials from UNR she accepted a position teaching in Yerington. Later she transferred to the Washoe County School District and taught in Verdi and at Jessie Beck Elementary School in Reno. Teaching almost every grade level from high school, where she started, to first grade, Melva's favorite grades to teach were third and fourth. While teaching, she headed the Ocean Project for the school district and helped it grow into part of every elementary school. She also helped develop and support Science Fair in the state. She retired from teaching in 1997. Her work after retirement from Washoe County School District included mentoring student teachers who were in their last semester of education.

Melva was a member of many educational associations and volunteered whenever help was needed. She was an integral part of Delta Kappa Gamma, a teachers' honorary association. Her responsibility each year was to find university or college students that needed financial help and to give them scholarships from the Delta Kappa Gamma Society. She was also the membership chairman, secretary and treasurer of the American Association of University Women of Sparks. Her work in the Washoe Retired Education Association brought in much funding for scholarships from the Jerry Mason Memorial golf tournament each year for students in education. She was a delegate to the National State Education Assembly and attended the national convention in Washington D.C. several times. She was working on her greatest passion, the Mentoring project for the NSEA, to help new teachers get started in the classroom. She will be remembered by these students for her loving help and suggestions of how to be a better teacher in the classroom. Melva also enjoyed working with the Wilbur D. May Museum.

She helped many families and children grow up not only through her teaching but by weaving herself into the lives of their families. Many of these young people would always look to her for advice and celebrate their lives with her.

She is survived by brothers John W. (Bill) Lynch of Sacramento, CA and Robert M. (Bob) Lynch of Reno; step-daughter Nancy Etchemendy; several nieces and nephews; and one great-nephew. She was preceded in death by brother James F. Lynch Jr.

A memorial service will be held on January 7 at 5 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church in Reno. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Washoe Retired Education Association - Jerry Mason Memorial Scholarship.

Not sure what to say?

I was fortunate enough to have Melva as a teacher at Jessie Beck for 1st and 3rd grades. She was a wonderful person; and made sure she found her students once she retired to see how what they were doing and the career paths we choose. It was great to see her at that time. I will never forget her. I am sorry for your loss; thoughts and prayers are with the family. Marla (Morgan) Brennan

I will aways remember Melva at the bridge table and on the road trips to Brookings with "the girls." She could sure tell a great story!! She was a dedicated teacher and mentor truly inspired her students and everyone around her. I hadn't seen her in awhile, but I miss her very much. My thoughts are with her close friends, Pat, Marian, Kathy, and Pat G.

My husband and I were sad to hear of the passing of Melva Ann. We were friends from early childhood in Elko. During our brownie and scout troop days we had many fun adventures together. We will miss seeing her at our class reunions.

I met Melva during the many years that my wife Rhonda taught 3rd grade next door to her at Jessie Beck. Over the years I came to know Melva as an oustanding teacher and a dear friend. She always had a great zest for life, and throughly enjoyed her students fellow teachers, and many friends. Melva was blessed with a warm smile, hearty laugh, passion for learning, and a strong independent spirit. Melva was loyal to her friends and one of those solid people you know you can always depend on. I will miss seeing and talking with her about friends, people, events, and the history of the area. Melva was a wonderful person who kept the faith and completed her course. God Bless her.

Teaching 3rd grade next door at Jessie Beck with Melva for many yeears was a true pleasure. She was witty, wise, and helpful. Melva was a great teacher who was always willing to share her wealth of experience with fellow educators. She gave even more to education outside the classroom whether it was the Ocean Project, Science Fair Judge, or coming to read to my class during Reading Week. After she retired from the classroom she continued to contribute to education through mentoring student teachers and passing on her passion for students and learning. Melva had a sparkle in her eyes that reflected true warmth in her heart. I always looked forward to seeing her with our breakfast group on Fridays before school. Plainly and simply, Melva Howell was a wonderful person, dear friend, and I will miss her.

I will miss my dear friend, Melva. We spent many happy times together in our Elko neighbor hood and Girl Scout Troop. I think her scout name was Elf. It certainly fit didn't it? She was always the happy camper. I use many of the ideas she shared to teach my students. We gave out daughter Melva's middle name Ann to show her how much she meant to both my husband and me.
