Paul Beavers Obituary

Paul Beavers

On April 10th Paul Beavers ended his journey on earth at his Reno home with his loving wife and children, and a wonderful hospice nurse at his side after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

He was born October 18th, 1939 in Hastings, NE. He spent his youth in Edgar, NE graduating from Edgar High. He earned his journalism degree from UNO and started his television news career with KMTV in Omaha before joining NBC in Los Angeles. His broadcast journalism career took him around the country before he retired to Reno. Paul's passion was golf (he could claim two holes-in-one) and he loved, fishing, Amateur (Ham) radio, bridge and traveling. Paul was loved by all who had the honor of knowing him. He had a brilliant mind and a gentle spirit and inspired all to act with kindness and integrity.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years Dorene, children Thomas, Gregg (Krista) and Jonette Ayubi (John-Paul) and 8 grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, April 15th at 11 a.m. at South Reno United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to St. Mary's Hospice and CaringBridge.org.

Cheers. 73's Paul NG1Q.

Paul Beavers had a profound impact on investigative reporting in Chicago. His creation, UNIT 5, is still out there causing trouble 31 years after he started the team in 1979. NOTHING lasts that long in television. I was not part of UNIT 5 in 1979. I was with Peter Karl at WLS-TV. I will never, ever forget the day after the UNIT 5 Strip Search story. It was the full front page of the Chicago Sun-Times. It changed everything. Literally in that instant, local television investigative reporting was a huge deal to attract viewers, force changes, and win awards. Even in today's environment, local ABC, NBC, CBS, and FOX all have investigative groups. I think, thanks to Paul Beavers.

Dorene, Paul gave me a giant break when he brought me to WMAQ. I was just released from WLS and Paul said he'd find a job for me and he did. He was a great boss but more importantly he was a great man who cared for those who worked for him. I am proud to say I knew him. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Peter Karl

In the early 80's, I joined Paul's team at WMAQ-TV in Chicago as the producer of the 6PM news with Chicago legends Jim Ruddle and Carol Marin. Many years later, when Paul was living here in Atlanta and I became news director at one of the local stations, he called to congratulate and encourage me. That was the kind of man he was--he always had time for a good word and a show of support. He leaves a mark where he's been--the true sign of a life well-lived. My thoughts and prayers for Paul and his family.

Dear Paul,

It has been so many years since we last talked on the air...I believe it was on 75 meters over 25 years ago when you were in CT. My deepest sympathies to your xyl and family. Thanks so much for all of the fond memories you left for me. I know we will meet again and I look forward to that moment. I always enjoyed talking to your aunt, Cleo, here in Fairbury.

Godspeed, Paul

I had the good fortune to have worked with Paul at WMAQ-TV in Chicago beginning in the late 1970's. Wish I had known him earlier when he produced the KMTV "Portrait of a Storm" documentary at KMTV. It's a television news classic. My best wishes to his family.

Dorene, Paul was my news director at WMAQ-TV in Chicago. He gave me a big break doing commentary on the 10PM news in the late 70's. Also remember the time he sent me to cover pollution on the Chicago River. The charter capt. later took Paul and I fishing. He was delighted to catch many Coho Salmon. He was a fine man and will be in my prayers. Peter Nolan, Glenview, IL

It is always a stunning event when someone as dear and funny and handsome as Paul passes .... seems like things should at least slow down for pause and reflection ..... life continues to continue, however, and we who loved Paul will do the slowing down and recalling of how lovely his life was, how special he was to so many folks.
To Dorene and the rest of the family, we send love and prayers.
Our best tribute to Paul will be in the years when we remember him so fondly, and with such gratitude at having been a small part of his life.

Dorene,
Received word of Paul's passing; my prayers are with you at this sad time for your family.
But I want to tell you something: 31 years ago, Paul fought to hire me at WMAQ-TV, even though his bosses questioned why he would hire a Chinese woman for Chicago. Paul told them he was hiring me because I was a good reporter, not because of the color of my skin. I thanked him.
That was the start of a successful career in this city, where I am still an anchor.
Please be comforted in knowing I am just one small story in a long list of people Paul helped in his lifetime.

Dorene,
I just happened to read the World Herald online this morning and saw Paul's obituary. My condolences to you and your family.
Our lives have certainly changed. Ken has been dead over 13 years already.
I continue to hear from Warren Franke at Christmas.
