August 25, 1926

August 21, 2012

Robert Backus, 85, of Reno passed away on August 21, 2012 in the comfort of his home and with the love of his family. Robert was born in Hansen, Idaho to Clement Backus and Camilla (Dalley) Backus. He was the sixth of seven children, and graduated from Glenns Ferry High School, Glenns Ferry, Idaho, in May 1945. He enlisted in the United States Army in January 1945, becoming a Technician Fifth Grade and serving in the Army of Occupation in Japan. He was awarded the Army of Occupation Medal, Asian-Pacific Service Medal, and Victory Medal, and honorably discharged in September 1946. Robert was a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the American Legion.

Robert graduated from the University of Idaho (Moscow) in 1953 with a degree in History. Robert spent seventeen and a half years with the Hartford Insurance Company, in Spokane, Oakland, Sacramento, Reno, and the Home Office in Hartford, Connecticut, utlimately serving as Western Regional Claim Manager for the Company. From 1967-1971, with partner John Scott he owned Scott & Backus Insurance Adjusters located in Reno. From 1976-1986, he operated Revada Body Shop, also located in Reno.

Robert is survived by his wife, Sandra; daughters Dawn Backus, Susan Bellegante (Jim), and Marisa Backus of Reno; son Mark Backus (Alicia) of Henderson; grandsons Ryan Bellegante and Riley Backus of Reno; and brother Thomas Backus of Denver, Colorado.

Robert loved working with his hands and restored many vintage automobiles during his life. He was an avid home handyman who always had a home improvement project "in the works." He, together with his father-in-law George Thompson, built a log cabin in the mountains of Wyoming, where his family spent many happy summers.

Services will be private. The family would like to express appreciation to the Circle of Life Hospice for the valuable care and comfort they provided. Condolences may be expressed at www.rgj.com or through Washoe Memorial at www.WashoeMemorial.com.

My sincere condolences. Loss is always a challenge; however, you have many happy memories to reflect on as your Dad lived many years.
