John Abercrombie Obituary

John Abercrombie, renowned jazz-rock guitarist, has died at the age of 72, according to multiple news sources.

His death was confirmed by ECM Records, stating that Abercrombie died August 22, 2017, after a long illness.

Known for his fluid lyrical style, Abercrombie was a highly influential jazz-rock guitarist. He also played in the post-bop and free jazz styles.

"John could go anywhere – rhythmically, melodically, harmonically – at the drop of a hat," drummer Jack Dejohnette told NPR. "He had a very warm sound, and always played with sensitivity, dynamics. He could create atmosphere with his comping, and through his great use of space."

Abercrombie talked about developing his jazz-rock style in a 2012 interview for “Jazziz.” "I had to figure things for myself." I grabbed onto every device I had in my arsenal — my knowledge of harmony and the guitar, the few little fuzztones or pieces of gear that I used at the time — and tried to fit in.

Abercrombie was born in Port Chester, New York on December 16, 1944. Inspired by early rockers like Chuck Berry and Bill Haley, he took up the guitar in his teens. He studied at the Berklee School of Music, eventually moving to New York City. He became a highly-regarded session player, working with Chico Hamilton, Gil Evans and other musicians.

He recorded his first solo album “Timeless” in 1974 for ECM Records. Drummer Jack Dejohnette and organist Jan Hammer played on the album, which was critically acclaimed.

He then formed the jazz-rock group Gateway, who released two albums.

After Gateway, Abercrombie played in a more traditional bop style and recorded as The Abercrombie Quartet. In the 1980s, he explored electronic instruments and worked in the free jazz genre.

He continued to tour and record for ECM Records. His last album titled “Up and Coming” by the John Abercrombie Quartet, was released earlier this year.

Abercrombie is survived by his wife, Lisa.

Lisa - I just found out on the radio. I am so sorry; was there any funeral or memorial? John and I went to different high schools together; we met just after. We've been friends since working together at Stop and Shop in Greenwich. Anything I can do? Please take care.

Lisa
My condolences for your loss
John was a friend since we were 14 years old. He was in a band with my brother Gil, typical teenage rock and roll band, but his talent was evident then.
His talent aside my greatest memories are of his quick wit, humor and kindness. I remember having
Dinners at his house, with his parents, whom I adored, especially the ice cream in half a cantaloupe his mom used to give us.
We would see each other over the years, but with me being in California, not enough
As memories are the legacy of our lives his are singular ones filled with light and humor

I got musically aquainted with Abercrombie in my teenage cellar-room with one of my best friends. As part of a larger local group of youngsters, we were heavily into Jimi Hendrix in the late 80's and in our search to expand our musical horizons of experimental jazz-rock-blues, and the electric guitar in particular, we filtered through the massive record collections of the city library, brought back the loot and gave them a listen in our teenage-caves. Abercrombie - and in particular his early work and Gateway - was among the gems we found during these listens. It was wild music, different, intense yet emotionally very nuanced. It sent me on mind-trips, I have never heard anything like it and I was in awe of the musicianship of how it was delivered. Outstanding.

Abercrombies music helped me bridge the genre-gaps that so often traps young people and I learned to listen to new stuff without prejudice or preconceived genre-ideas. A very rewarding lesson. Thank you Abercrombie, and thank you city library!

I have known John since high school. He knew what he wanted to do with his life then. When others were into rock 'n roll John was playing jazz. He loved the music and wanted to make it his career. I'll miss you John, I'll miss our talks when we would bump into each other in PV. Rest easy.
