John Shuttleworth Obituary

John (Jack) LaVere Shuttleworth Jr., 78, of Reynoldsville, passed away on May 17, 2023 surrounded by his loving family following a long battle with cancer. He was the oldest son of the late Edna Mae (Ardvison) and John L. Shuttleworth Sr.

Jack grew up in Dagus Mines and graduated from Ridgway High School in 1963. He married Milly (Custer) Shuttleworth on November 16, 1963.

Jack worked at Minns' Gas from 1963 until 1981. He and Milly then started their own property management business, which he enjoyed for the remainder of his life. He enjoyed hunting and fishing but most of all he enjoyed his family. Jack loved traveling with his wife Milly and their four children. Whether at an amusement park, dog show, gun show, concert, or a favorite destination like New York City, they spent most weekends on the go, keeping a pace that rarely slowed even throughout Jack's illness. Above all, however, time spent with his grandchildren, siblings, and friends was among his favorites.

Jack and Milly also enjoyed more than 30 years of involvement with the Fresh Air Fund, opening their home to 22 children from New York City for several weeks every summer. Courtney Stout arrived in 1978, and he remains part of the family.

Jack was a long-time member of the Reynoldsville Presbyterian Church and the Swede Club in DuBois.

In addition to his wife, Jack is survived by his children Julie Westman, Janet Shuttleworth, James (Jennifer) Shuttleworth and daughter-in-law Marsha Shuttleworth, his beloved grandchildren Jimmy (Aschleigh) Westman, Elton Shuttleworth, John Shuttleworth IV, Jackie (Braden) States, Emily Shuttleworth, Sara Shuttleworth, Grace Shuttleworth, and Evan Shuttleworth. He was delighted to visit with each of them in his final days. He is also survived by his siblings Bob (Judy) Shuttleworth, Sue (Joe) Dellaquila, Rose (Mike) Duchi, Jane Shuttleworth, Steve (Deb) Shuttleworth, Anne (Bruce) Shannon, and Arla (Laurie) Shuttleworth, and his uncle Bruce Shuttleworth as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his oldest son John.

To know Jack was to love him. He was loved by children and animals. He had an endless stream of visitors at Penn Highlands and despite his declining health, he greeted everyone with his wonderful, loving smile and always asked them how they were doing before anything else.

A memorial service will be held at Reynoldsville Presbyterian Church on Monday, May 22, 2023 at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial contribution to the Reynoldsville Presbyterian Church, 608 East Main St. in Reynoldsville, PA 15851 or the Fresh Air Fund at freshair.org/donate.

Dear Cousins,
Although I didn´t know Jack very well, my dad (Robert Shuttleworth) always had good things to say about Jackie, as he called him. Each time I was fortunate to speak with him his great personality was evident. Please find peace knowing he is at rest.

Jack was a loving husband, dad, & grandfather. He was always there no matter what for all of his and Milly's families and he will be missed by them all.
I will always remember Jack's smile and the way he would light up any area he was in. Heaven has another angel. Our families will forever be connected in friendship and love.
