I have wonderful memories of Alma and her family. I had the honor of being the live-in companion for Alma's dear Mother in the 1980's. Alma spent many days and nights with us while her Mother needed full-time care. I was treated as a member of the family and enjoyed living with Alma and her Mother. Alma's love for the Lord was her life and breath and purpose for living. I enjoyed helping Alma sort through and organize her stacks of mail from her friends from all over the world! She loved her friends and enjoyed the many adventures that she had with them. Alma was REAL in her faith in her personal and public life and became such a friend and mentor to me! I kept in touch through the years and always was embraced in her life! The best time of my life was spent with Alma and her Mother as her live-in companion, friend, and caregiver! Alma spent many late hours in her Mother's kitchen while she read and answered cards and letters and wrote her autobiography. I had a cat named Dusty that lived with us and Alma's Mother nicknamed her "RAMBO"! I enjoyed Alma's family so much and will always keep them close to my heart!! Alma, I love you and will cherish the great times we shared together!! Her love for Christ was revealed to me in everything she did! We were together at the moment her Mother passed away and it was such a sacred time. I know that Alma is rejoicing to be able to spend eternity with the Lord and see her Mother once again and "Brother". Alma and her family are the best! The world is a better place since Alma touched the lives of millions of people. Best of all, she touched my life---Beverly Keener. I now live in Abingdon, VA, but, Alma even made a trip here to see me several years ago! I took her to The Martha Washington Inn for lunch and we had a great time! I will always remember her smiling face and laughter as I told her she was an historical figure just as famous as Martha Washington! My love to her family---from Beverly Keener. Alma was a joy and a blessing from the Lord!!

I remember her always smiling face and cheerful remarks when I picked her up to go to Rosalind Hills Baptist Church or to go to keep that all important hair appointment. She was so easy to love and she knew how to remind you of your many blessings that God breaths on us each and every day. How fortunate we were to have her in our lives. To the Family of Miss Alma,
We were blessed to have Miss Alma and our mutual dear friend Arvil Pennington as guests in our home in Chesapeake, Virginia during Easter several years ago. On the evening of Maundy Thursday, we decided to visit a beautiful, candle-illuminated Baptist Church in downtown Norfolk. As we slipped into a pew, one could sense a certain buzz in the air. After a few moments, a lady behind us tapped Miss Alma on the shoulder seeking to confirm that this great lady was indeed who she was! It didn’t take long for the confirmation of her presence to spread throughout the entire congregation. One had only to look around to see the warm and excited smiles on the candle-lit faces of the congregants to know that they were astounded and delighted to have Miss Alma joining them in worship on this special evening of importance to all Christians.
As soon as the service concluded, Miss Alma was suddenly swarmed with a very large crowd of excited church members. We over- heard one lady’s excited comment that Richmond might have the governor but their church had Miss Alma on this night!
We slid into a pew and watched as a long line of excited Baptists formed to meet and share with this grand lady stories of what her .life had meant to their own. Humble as ever, Alma always shifted the conversations away from herself to encourage each person to actively support the cause of missions to spread the Word of God.
What a visit we had! Later we listened wide-eyed as we asked her to tell us stories of her travels on behalf of mission work
around the world. One just knew that no one intimidated Miss Alma! No earthly leaders from dictators to kings were a match for this amazing little lady’s intelligence and strength. She stood heads above them all and looked them right in the eye in her determination to open the doors of every nation on earth to allow missionaries to enter to spread the Word of God. The Holy Spirit worked through Miss Alma to further the ability of mission work to reach every man woman and child in every corner on this earth.
Miss Alma was a woman on a mission right up until her quiet passing on June 14, 2008. I would imagine that she is at this moment involved in organizing a special group of angels to assist her beloved WMU in spreading the word of God.
Miss Alma loved my mom’s cornbread, and we loved Miss Alma.

I want to express my heartfelt condolences to all of Alma Hunt's family, and extended family. I was blessed to meet her as she spoke at our church a few times, and then, just a couple of years ago, she returned. I will cherish the photographs I have of her and myself and some of our members. I was active in WMU and she so inspired many of us. God used her in a mighty way here on earth, and now He called her home to be among His angels. I loved her sweet voice and her lovely smile, and especially her reverent and wise words spoken. She is known world-wide through her efforts in bringing missionaries to be recognized, and supported . I am so thankful for the work she has done. My daughter yearns to be a missionary - and I know the impact Miss Alma has had on us has given my daughter that inspiration and desire. Thank you Lord for sharing her with us. My love and prayers to all the family.

To the Family of Alma Hunt:
We express our deepest sympathy to each of you in the loss of your loved one. We thank the Lord for the privilege of having heard Miss Hunt speak at Ridgecrest as well as other locations. She was such an inspiration to us to continue our journey for the Lord through WMU. She will be remembered for her love for missions, and her Godly influence will continue for generations to come.
Her many accomplishments were noteworthy even in the eyes of men. She touched many lives in our association and throughout the world with her powerful outreach. As a wonderful role model, many GA's will probably choose to follow in her footsteps. Miss Hunt was truly dedicated to her Lord, loved by everyone, and will be greatly missed especially by WMU members everywhere.
During this time of grief and sorrow, our thoughts and prayers are with each of you. May God bless you all!

One of my first experiences after graduating from Southern Seminary and beginning my work with Kentucky WMU was to meet and be in meetings with Alma Hunt. What a role model she was in every way. I learned so much just being in her presence and seeing her passion for the Lord and missions.

Dear Family of Alma Hunt: First I'll remind you who I am. I am Janice Moses. I was a dietary aide at Loyalton for nearly four years. I fell in the kitchen on Dec.6,2007. I continued working until my right leg just "gave out". My last day of work was Jan. 13,2007. On Jan.30 I was told I had a broken right hip. My surgeon put three screws in my hip , but to this day It has not healed so I cannot work.
Now to my Sweet Alma: When she entered the dining room she always gave me a Hug and a greeting:" Bless You " was her greeting. I always felt so loved and Blessed by Alma. It was like being hugged by an Angel from Heaven.
One of Alma's, Van's ,Lucille's and Lee Gardner's favorite summer foods was a fresh home grown tomato sliced and served with cottge cheese.
When I saw Alma's picture in the paper I cried ,but I know that even though Alma has left our Earth, she is still busy in Heaven.
Alma honored me by giving me two of her books. I will cherish them.
May God be with you and may your memories of Alma stay with you until we all meet again in Heaven.

Dear Friends
What a loss Baptist women around the world have sustained in the passing of our dear Alma! I was privileged to have followed her as president of North American Baptist Women, 1982-87. She has continued to be an inspiration to me,showing me that I can continue to serve my Lord, no matter how many years I have before I graduate into Glory, just as she has. My husband and I will always remember "the lady with the pretty lace collar and the smile on her face." May God bless you all in these days.

Alma Hunt has always been an inspiration to me as a true woman of God. I returned from the mission field for our first state side (missionary in Taiwan)assignment and was invited to speak at Roanoke First Baptist. When I arrived there and began talking with others I found out that Ms Alma would be there listening to me. Wow was I nervous!! When I finished speaking she approached me and with tears in her eyes said, well honey God has touched our hearts once again through the stories you have told, don't ever stop working for God! I looked in her eyes that evening and thought to myself this is a Godly, dedicated woman of God. Ms Alma,Thank you for the example you have set before us as we continue in His work. May God find us faithful as I am sure He has you!

Miss Alma was indeed a special lady who truly had a heart for missions all of her 98 blessed years! She was such an inspiration in my life as I enjoyed listening to her tell of her work and travels when I was a GA, YWA, and WOM. I had the wonderful priviledge of going to her home and bringing her to Danville to speak for the Baptist Young Women and then taking her home. Just last fall at the Women's Get Away at Eagle Eyrie I had a picture taken with her. Memories I will treasure forever. She always made you feel like you were her special friend. Christ love was evident in all her goings and comings. She will be missed because she was loved!

I have many fond memories of Miss Alma Hunt. I was a guest for dinner in her home a few times. She was my guest at a luncheon at Natural Bridge with the Secretary of the Interior one Saturday a few years back. Alma had not been to the bridge in over 70 years and enjoyed seeing it again as one of the maintenance employees rode her on a golf cart. Alma tremendously enjoyed the Friday evening Seafood Buffet there. We enjoyed meals together at S&S Cafeteria, Carlos Brazilian and other places. She attended a Missions Festival with me at Life Church in Roanoke also.
The last outing that I had with Miss Alma was this past December. We attended a dinner and Christmas program at Greene Memorial United Methodist Church in Roanoke. She so much enjoyed the program.
Alma was always so gracious and lots of fun to be around. She will be missed.

I first met Miss Alma in 1979 when I was in the hospital in Taipei, Taiwan. She was in Taiwan for meetings with the Chinese Baptist WMU. When she heard that one of the missionaries was in the hospital she asked to come see me. I was surprized that she would come visit me. I have had other occasions to see Miss Alma, but her visit when I was in the hospital is the one I will always remember. People were important to her.

We send our condolances to each of you who are saddened by this great loss. Miss Alma will always be remembered by the myriad of missionaries who knew her, with love and affection. She was always a delight to be with and was more knowledgeable about missions and missionaries than anyone we knew.

Alma Hunt was a very influential lady for the WMU. As I was a member of sunbeams, GA's, Acteens and the WMU her name was always associated with missions. Later, when I became a member of First Baptist and part of the Alma Hunt WMU group she was able to personally tell us something about every missionary we prayed for. Eventually, I was able to go on mssion trips and actually see some of the work of Southern Baptist missionaries. She will always be remembered for her passion for missions.

I learned from one of our four daughters on Sunday about Miss Alma's going home to be with the Lord. I had not heard news of her for some time. But she had been a meaningful person to so many of us coming up thru college and Bapt. Women during her time of service with WMU. Please know, family members, of our love for her, and also you, during this time of grief, and yet rejoicing for her transition into her Heavenly Home with Him.
You will have so many of us thinking of your family and those who cared for her in these last years, and praying for all who will be attending her funeral on Wednesday.
We last saw her when she visited our Taiwan Mission during her retirement years in the late '70s. What a joy it was to hear her inspirational message to all of us, and her many stories of years past. We thank God on every remembrance of her, and what she meant to so many!

Miss Hunt was so dear to us as she visited us and the mission work in Tanganyika in the late 50's. Her response to receiving a live chicken as a gift gave everyone a laugh, she just couldn't touch it! She always was such a delight to be with when we saw her on our furloughs. She truly was God's woman with a powerful outreach around the world. She will always be remembered for her love for missions and missionaries. We are among her 'far-flung friends', now emeritus missionaries.

I first met Miss Hunt when I was 13 years old and attended WMU week at Ridgecrest with extended family members. I convinced my parents to go the next year and those WMU week programs had a profound impact on my life. Whenever I saw her, she remembered me and was always gracious. I do believe my favorite time with her was a week at Camp Little Crossroads where we shared the guest house. She told many of her stories and kept us laughing in our our free time. I will miss her.

TRIBUTE TO ALMA HUNT, THE LEGEND OF A WOMAN
Thank you, Alma, for helping me to write the early history of my life with Baptists of the world. Our friendship began in Rio do Janeiro, Brazil in 1960 and has and will continue till I see you in the Father's Home. Only eternity will reveal your contribution to the women of the world! There must be great rejoicing in Heaven, as you meet with dear "Miss M." I will always love and miss you.

To Alma's family--Our family connection with Alma Hunt goes back 72 years when my sister met her at Ridgecrest. That friendship was renewed when Dr.Binns asked her to become Dean of Women at William Jewell College--where 13 of our family have been educated. My mother, Madge Truex, was WMU Secretary for Missouri and was given the honor of telling Alma that she had been selected as WMU secretary for the Southern Baptist Convention. We have maintained our contacts with Alma regularly with infrequent visits st conventions, in our home in St. Louis and with letters and phone calls. She has been an inspiration to countless numbers of people, but she will always have a special place in the hearts of the Truex family of Missouri. May she finally rest in Peace--but I doubt it!

As a young girl in the late 1950s & 1960s, when there were few women role models for girls to look up to, I learned all about Alma Hunt and her mission work as a member of Girls Auxiliary (G.A.s). It was hard to imagine a woman accomplishing so much and it being noteworthy in the eyes of men. Without a doublt Alma Hunt was my first and would continue to be one of my greatest women role models. Thank you Girls Auxiliary of Liberty Baptist Church in Appoxmatox, VA for introducing me to such a genuine woman at such an early age.

Kindness, Integrity, Courage -- Alma Hunt was a baptist that brought class to our tradition at a time when there was little of it. She inspired many young women into ministry vocations -- and denominations all over the world are grateful for that global gift. She was one of a kind!

Miss Alma was known and loved by everyone she ever met. I will always remember the way she encouraged me. Miss Alma, treated everyone as her very best friend. She walked with leaders of the world, lead Baptist in missions and the value of women in Chirstian work - the Matriarch of Baptist world wide and she loved us all including the "no bodies"and made us feel we were her very best friend. Her counsel was wise. As the WMUV Parish Nurse Project was starting, she reviewed the Virginia Parish Nurse Project Manual and gave me counsel. She said, "You will do well if you are as interested in the projects of others as you are in your own." Once she came to my house to check me out to see if I had what it took to be chairperson of the newly forming Alma Hunt Women on Mission group at her church. The meeting was during a meal hour and she brought a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken. I about paniced that THE Miss Alma was coming to my house for a meal. Should I get out the best silver, china, crystal - are my manners good enough, etc.?? She put the bucket in the middle of the dinning room table, blessed the food and reached in and got a leg and begain to eat with her hands. She put my fears to rest, she was just like us. Humility, Christlikeness, words are inadequate to describe Miss Alma. What a blessing it has been to live in Roanoke and get to know the woman I learned about/ memorized her name in GA Forward Steps many years ago. She blessed my life so....
