Brian Lee Zimmerman

On Thursday, September 5, 2024, Brian Lee Zimmerman of Roanoke, VA, died at his home in the presence of family. He was 72 years old.

Brian was born in Roanoke on February 11, 1952, to Harold and Dolores Zimmerman. He attended William Fleming High School, and subsequently Roanoke College, graduating with a degree in psychology in 1974.

Before his college graduation, Brian married Karen Johnson Zimmerman, and last year in October they celebrated their 50 anniversary.

He is survived by his wife, Karen; their three children, Justin, Christopher, and Sarah; and his grandchildren, Artemis, Winifred, Idabelle, Madeleine, and Josephine. Brian was beloved by an abundance of friends both in his hometown and elsewhere, who were a source of many kindnesses and encouragement in his final years.

A memorial service will be held at Christ the King Presbyterian Church, where Brian was a dedicated communicant, on Wednesday, September 18 at 2:30 p.m.

Sincere sympathy and prayers to Brian's family. Our son Bob Slusher and Brian were best friends through Huff Lane and William Fleming High School in Roanoke. We were neighbors and were acquainted with his parents years ago. Brian and Bob took swimming lessons together at the YMCA and we were happy to be able to work together to get them to their after school events. They were dedicated Christian family and we have fond memories of them.

Finding out that Brian has left us is a real shock. Having known Brian and Karen since our beautiful days in young adulthood, we just assume this mortal life will carry on. And as our parents warned us - time passes quickly. This loss leaves me bereft.
I have many thoughts and memories of him. He was a man of great faith, a brilliant intellect a super husband and father- and a man with a very wry sense of humor.
I always felt supported by him and was very sad when I´d moved back to Roanoke and they moved to Richmond. Our work and life schedules prevented reconnection when they moved back.
I am remembering just now a comment he made to me at some point. He said- " every day lived is just one day closer to Jesus." I´m sad that Brian is gone, sad for Karen and the family, but comforted that he is now with the Lord and Savior he loved and shared with so many. God Bless.

Our family was blessed to know Brian as a Christian brother and as a wonderful husband and father. Our children were good friends and enjoyed time together at church and at the Zimmerman home.
We thank the Lord for their family and we hold them in our hearts and prayers at this time.
