Carol Fields Obituary

Carol Lynne Williams Fields

November 11, 1932 - February 19, 2025

Carol Lynne Williams Fields passed away on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, at her home, at the age of 92. She was known by most as Lynne, but she was affectionately known as "Gramma Lynne". She was an elementary school teacher for almost 40 years, spending approximately 27 years teaching at East Salem Elementary School. She was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church in Roanoke, VA, yet she spent her last years as a member of Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church.

She lived a life of service to others as reflected in her chosen profession as an educator, her friends, family and her faith. She quietly deeply touched the community around her, through her students, prayer groups, church family, scout leader and unending support of her family. She served others through her extensive volunteering and organizing events through her community and church. Her thoughtfulness could be measured through the abundance of Hallmark cards she would send. Her empathy for others and the community around her was multiplied by the people she touched.

She was born on November 11, 1932, in Bloomfield, NJ, to David Williams and Elizabeth Secor Williams. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Vincent Fields III. They were married for 36 years.

She is survived by her daughter, Leslie Fields Matney and her husband, Randy K. Matney; son, Thomas Vincent Fields IV; and her grandson, John Bolt Robertson Jr. and his wife, Cindy Capriles Robertson; and her great-granddaughter, Sofia Elizabeth Robertson; and faithful companion, Jane the beagle.

The family would like to express special thanks to the staff and congregation of Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church for their amazing support, the caregivers of Good Samaritan Hospice and her special caretaker, Haylee Bell.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, March 7, 2025, at Oakey's North Chapel. Memorial Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church with Pastor Andrew Whaley officiating.

Donations can be made in her memory to Presbyterian Women or The Twelve Foundation through Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church. Condolences may be shared with her family by visiting www.Oakeys.com.

Mrs Fields was my Kindergarten teacher in 1979-1980. I have never forgotten her kindness and the way she encouraged my love of reading. Even after all these years, I still remember her.
