Christopher Jason Askew, 45, of Roanoke, Virginia, passed away on Monday, September 26, 2022.

He was a graduate from Northside High School in 1995 and went on to receive his bachelor's degree from Emory and Henry College, where he played football. While in college he helped lead the wasps to win four consecutive ODAC championships. Chris taught Health, Physical Education, Driver's Education and coached football at William Byrd High School for over 16 years and was currently teaching and coaching football at Cave Spring High School where his two oldest children, Carson and Meg graduated from and where his youngest, Grae is currently a senior.

His passion was teaching and coaching, he lived his life making a positive impact on all of his students and players. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and truly loved Alabama Football. "Roll Tide!" He was a big advocate and supporter of his daughter and attended all of Grae's Cheer events. He coached his son, Carson, for four years, passing down his passion for the game. He was so proud of his daughter, Meg's, academic accomplishments following in his footsteps at his alma mater. Chris was famous for his coined phrases of "Attitude and Effort" and "Quiet is Cool." He was preceded in death by his father, Jack Askew Jr.; maternal grandparents, Harley and Ruby Berkey; paternal grandfather, Jack Askew Sr.; and brother-in-law, Kevin Humphries.

Chris is survived by his children, Carson Askew, Meg Askew, and Grae Askew; mother, Patti Askew and her husband, Steve Fitzgerald; sister, Jessica Askew; paternal grandmother, Sarah Smith (MeeMaw); nieces, Kaylee, Nora, and Kinsley; nephew, Marc; mother to his children, Amy Askew; close friend, Carla Ponn; lifelong fishing and hunting buddies and companions, Larry Long and Mike Kendrick; numerous cousins; and other extended family.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Sunday, October 2, 2022, at Cave Spring High School.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cave Spring Knights Booster Club or to the Virginia Wildlife Resources. Online condolences may be expressed at www.Oakeys.com.

I taught Chris in art class at NHS. He was a silly tenth grader who was cute, fun, and always very kind to everyone. I was so sad to hear that he has passed. My sympathy and love to his family.
