David Sutherland Obituary

David Anthony Sutherland, 74, of Penhook, was born September 19, 1935. He fought a courageous battle with cancer for the last five years, departing this world Sunday morning, December 13, 2009 to meet his maker. David was the son of the late, Ben Rucker and Mary Belle Sutherland. His brother, Benjamin Sutherland, gave his life in 1944 at Normandy, France in World War II. His sister, Mary Frances Sutherland Harvell died on October 24, 2008. Those remaining to cherish him memory include his loving wife, Marion B. Sutherland, having been together for 42 years; one stepson, Bobby Brown, Wirtz; one niece, Ann Maddox; a nephew, Benny Harvell , and wife Susan; sisters-in-law, Maxene Dickerson, Boones Mill, Dotsie Motley and husband Wayne, Rocky Mount. David was graduate of Ferrum College . During David's life he accomplished many meaningful tasks. He was one of the first TV repairmen in Franklin County. One of his most enjoyed hobbies was talking around the world on his amateur radio. David was a charter member of Penhook United Methodist Church having taught Sunday School for many years and supported all areas of the church's ministry until his death. He was a rural mail carrier for over twenty years, serving Penhook and Union Hall. One of his most enjoyable ministries was visiting the local nursing homes and entertaining the many residents, with his voice and musical instruments in Rocky Mount and Gretna. David will be remembered for his many acts of kindness, always putting others before himself and always willing to help his neighbor or friend in time of need. The family respectfully request no food. In lieu of flowers the family also request contributions be made to the American Cancer Society or a charity of one's choice. Graveside services will be conducted from the Brooks-Brown Family Cemetery 11 a.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Judith Short officiating. His family will be receiving friends one hour prior to the service at the cemetery. Arrangements by Lynch Conner-Bowman Funeral Home, Rocky Mount. www.lynchconnerbowman.com.

Marion,

I have many fond memories of time spent with David when I was growing up. I went to interesting places with him (like camping out on the top of Smith Mountain), studied for my ham radio license with him, and worked in his TV shop. I credit him with nourishing my love for technical things, an interest which still serves me well today. He was a faithful member of Northfield, and later Penhook Church up until he was no longer able to participate. I have never known him to do a mean thing or say a mean thing about anyone. My sympathies and best wishes to you and Bobbie.

Dear Marion,
David was one of a kind, he was the most genuine and kindest person you would ever want to meet. May your many wonderful memories see you through the sorrowful days ahead. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
