Gordon Lee Obituary

Gordon Condon "Gordy" Lee

October 31, 1956 - February 2, 2024

Many an evening stirred wonder and gratitude for Gordy Lee as he watched the sun glide behind the blue Alleghenies from his foothills home near Bonsack.

Gordon Condon "Gordy" Lee died there on Friday, February 2, 2024, in the company of his cherished partner, Susan Underwood. Gordy was 67.

He crossed swords with cancer three years ago and fought long and hard before succumbing.

Gordon Lee was born on October 31, 1956, in Roanoke, Va. He was one of five children born to Penny and Thomas Lee. He attended public schools in Roanoke and then attended Hampden-Sydney College.

Gordy was a loyal, deeply valued employee of Revcar Fasteners, now Wurth Revcar Fasteners.

Gordy, like his four siblings, had a keen wit, a ready laugh, and an appreciation for both the treasures and absurdities of life. He was a gifted woodworker and possessed remarkable savvy about all things in the realm of technology.

For years, Penny and Tom hosted an often rowdy and always hilarious party on New Year's Day at the family home on Cassell Lane in Roanoke.

Tom anchored the den of iniquity, where partygoers filled furniture and a small set of bleachers. Penny cooked chili. Festivities included skits, watching college football, and tossing empty beer cans toward a trash can. Anyone who attended regularly has many stories to tell. Some are even true.

After Tom and Penny died, Gordy and his wife, Carol Henahan Lee, began to host the New Year's Day party at their house with its gorgeous mountain views. They were generous to a fault with their time and hospitality.

Tragically, Carol died suddenly and unexpectedly in July of 2014 from a brain aneurysm, leaving Gordy to grieve her loss for the rest of his days.

Yet he was fortunate later to have Susan enter his life and become a dear companion.

Gordy was preceded in death by his parents, Penny and Tom, and his wife, Carol. He is survived by his brother, Tom Lee, and sisters Shannon Lee, Molly O'Dell and Jenny Lee.

A celebration of Gordy's life will be scheduled later in keeping with his festivity traditions. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Good Samaritan Hospice in honor of the wonderful staff who cared for Gordy. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.Oakeys.com.

Life is too short. We are so lucky to have had Gordy visit us in Lynchburg for our traditiinal live music listening events in our home. He told me calmly and in his trademark matter-of-fact demeanor that he had "crossed swords" with the biological army that gets in the way of things. Gordy seemed to be resolved and ready to go forward with whatever was to come. Courageous in his resolution. I only hope I can be so in the face of the universal and inevitable path we all must hike. Gordy leaves some the best of his ways and the gleam in his eye for all of us who remain on the path. Love to all of the Lees and those who were lucky like me to have known one of my brother Bill's best friend. May gratitude follow the many tears. Thank you, Gordy!

My family lived in the neighborhood, but we went to another school. Gordy was often spoken of fondly by George, Jim, and Stephen. His quiet demeanor was punctuated by bright witty enlightened courtesies and courageous banter. We were united in Chi Phi fraternity. I was late arriving there, and he me feel secure. One Easter, many friends met to camp at wooly China Grove blue grass festival. Everyone wanted to be with Gordy. Let´s all live like him!
