James Kirk Obituary

James W. "Jim" Kirk

July 4, 1932 - August 2, 2021

James W. Kirk "Jim" born on July 4, 1932, to the late Jennette Osborne Kirk and Glen Elvin Kirk, passed on to his Heavenly Home on August 2, 2021, with his loving niece, Judy Price by his side.

Born in Smyth County, he attended Sugar Grove High School and graduated from The American School in Illinois and began his career with Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Company, where he served for 29 years. He modeled to his family and fellow workers the importance of hard work and always doing your best. He loved his work and strived to make a difference. During this time, he attained his Charter Life Underwriter and Chartered Financial Consultant Designations. He retired from Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Company as a District Sales Manager.

His love of God was core to his true being. He was a faithful congregant of St. Paul United Methodist Church and worked tirelessly to serve God and to serve others in the name of the Lord.

Next to his love of God was his devotion to his family. With kindness and generosity he tried to care for them to the best of his ability.

Jim was a Korean War Veteran and worked for the Brunswick Corporation as a Defense Products Estimator. His love and allegiance for his Country continued to be displayed in his membership of the American Legion and The Veterans of Foreign Wars. He also worked diligently to improve his community as a member of the Christiansburg Lions Club. Jim was an avid golfer. In fact, he loved all types of sports. He supported local sports and Virginia Tech Athletics with his attendance and financially.

Jim is survived by a granddaughter, Amber; four sisters, Pauline Pickle, Opal Stamper, Charlotte Childers, and Carol Caldwell; and two sisters-in-law, Judy Barbre and Patsy Musser. Also many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins were recipients of his unconditional love. He also enjoyed a special friendship with Billie Jean Hill and Betty and Dennis Semones.

Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Musser Kirk; son, Jeff Kirk; brothers, Ralph E. Kirk, Willie Kirk, Charles L. Kirk, and Hobert Kirk; and sisters, Katherine Stone, Gladys Ferguson, Blanch Chaney, Bertha Simmens, and Helen Barnes.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 5, 2021, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Mike Derflinger officiating. Interment will follow in the Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery, Dublin. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Paul Endowment Fund at St. Paul UMC, 220 W. Main St., Christiansburg, VA 24073.

Our dear Farm Bureau friend who traveled the world over with us as we always helped him with his "quest" for Pauline who remained at home. Rest in peace.
