James "Jim" Wilson Rust Jr., 86, of Salem, Va., passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on Wednesday, June 14, 2023.
He was born on January 31, 1937, in Matoaca, Va., to the late James Wilson Rust Sr and Beatrice Fahead.
He was a graduate from the Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1957. Following graduation, Jim was commissioned into the United States Air Force where he served for 20 years. While his military assignments placed him throughout the world, his career with Norfolk Southern brought him to Roanoke in 1983.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Barbara "Bobbie;" siblings, Linda Davis and Ronnie Rust; children, James (Abby) Rust III, Cynthia (Bill) Figgers, Kathryn (Shawn) Evans, and Stephanie (Brad) Welles.
Jim's legacy as "Pop Pop," musician, and sports enthusiast, specifically the Washington Redskins, will continue to endure through his twelve grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A Funeral Service with Full Military Honors will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 15, 2023, at Cave Spring United Methodist Church with Pastor Lauren Lobenhofer officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memoriam/honorarium to Good Samaritan Hospice, 2408 Electric Road, Roanoke, VA 24018 or to Cave Spring United Methodist Church, 4505 Hazel Drive, Roanoke, VA 24018. Online condolences may be made at www.Oakeys.com.
