Jeffrey Howell of Montvale, Va., departed this life suddenly on Monday, July 21, 2025. He was born In Roanoke, Va., to James T. Howell and Frances "Emma" Roberts Howell.
He was a graduate of Liberty High School in Bedford County, Va., and also VPI, Blacksburg, Va., where he double majored in sociology and psychology. He began his career as a case worker at Stokely Center in Georgetown, Del.
He then worked as a clerk of the court before appointment as Prothonotary in Sussex County, Del. After moving back to Virginia in 1995, he served as a probation and parole officer in Lynchburg. In later years, he worked as overnight manager at the Bonsack Walmart, where he made several close friends before retiring as the only remaining original store employee at that location.
Jeff enjoyed hunting, fishing, canoeing, hiking, camping, antique collecting, buying and selling, and owning numerous dogs and cats throughout the years. Family life and socializing with good friends were his favorite pastimes.
Jeff is survived by his son, Eric C. Howell (Brittany) of Bremerton, Wash; former wife, Susan Howell of Dublin, Va.; uncle, Paul "Sweet pea" Howell (Sandra); and maternal first cousins, Sylvia Whitmore, Gerald Parsons (Mona), Thelbert Silverman (Mary Ann), and Ray Parsons (Gay). Surviving paternal cousins are Pamela Graham, Sharon Smith, Dana Tuck, Steve Howell, Valerie Holdren, Teressa Dooley, and Stephanie Kirkbride. He is also survived by close friend, Penny Burns; his beloved dog companions, Frank and Moki; as well as Bear, his cat.
Visitation will be held at Oakey's Funeral Home in Vinton, Va., at 1 p.m. on Sunday, July 27, 2025, with the funeral service to follow at 2 p.m. The family wishes to thank everyone for their support during this difficult time. Online condolences may be made to the family by visiting www.Oakeys.com.
