Pauline Corn Obituary

Pauline Lester (Polly) Corn, 87, passed from this life on July 31, 2012. She had lived for 65 years in Radford, and more recently resided in Raleigh, N.C. Polly was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph, along with 10 brothers and sisters. Polly is survived by a daughter, Paula Sue Corn Rinehart and husband, Stacy, of Raleigh, N.C.; and son, John Corn and wife, Karen, of Columbia, Tenn.; grandchildren, Allison Rinehart Hinkle and husband, Jonathan, Brady Rinehart and wife, Hannah, Amanda Corn Bostic and husband, Randy, and Benjamin Corn; great-grandchildren, Andrew, Molly, and Will Hinkle, Reid and Kayleigh Bostic. Polly left Hurley, located in the coalfields of Southwest Virginia, in the midst of World War II, coming to Radford College in 1942, receiving a degree in accounting and being elected May Queen. She went on to teach Business for eight years at Radford High School, and was principal at Radford's McHarg Elementary for a year. She taught accounting for three years at Radford College and 19 years at Virginia Tech. For most of her time at VT, Polly served as coordinator for the Principles of Accounting course sequence. In this role, she was responsible for the preparation of course syllabi, exams, and lesson plans for over 1,000 students each quarter and mentoring Ph.D. candidates in their teaching skills.
One of her proudest accomplishments was serving on Radford's City council for 12 years, including serving as Vice-Mayor for four years. Her fiscal conservatism and no-nonsense style were well known by the residents of Radford. She also served the City for a number of years as Chairperson of Emergency Medical Service Board. She served as President of the NRVMC Hospital Auxiliary, Member of the state Board of Hospital Volunteers Association, and member of the Board of Directors for Round Meadow Country Club. She served the office of Treasurer of the Grove United Methodist church for over 20 years, and was also Treasurer for her Townhouse Association and the Radford Heritage Foundation. As a member of the Hospital auxiliary she could be found at least one day a week serving families in need in the Critical Care and Surgery lounges.
Polly was an avid golfer, enjoying immensely the time outdoors and friendships she made at all the New River Valley courses. Bridge was her passion, playing multiple times a week until very close to her death and amassing a huge library of writings on the subject. One of her last areas of service was teaching others in assisted living how to play.
The family will receive visitors on Saturday, August 4, 2012, at the Grove United Methodist church from noon to 2 p.m., with a memorial service immediately following and graveside burial at Sunrise Cemetery. DeVilbiss Funeral Home in Radford is handling the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, the family wishes contributions be made to the Pauline L. Corn Scholarship, University Development, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, TN 24061, or to Grove United Methodist Church in Radford.

Professor Corn was a wonderful teacher and role model. It was because of her class that I chose accounting as my profession and I often think of her and that class and how it set my path in life. Because of her inspiration I have had a wonderful career and I have been able to provide a great life for my family. God bless you, Professor Corn and thanks for being such a great role model.

Mrs. Corn was one of my favorite professors at Radford College in the early 60's and one I have never forgotten. She was such a smart, vibrant individual who loved her students. I have thought of her with fond memories many times over the past years. I was quite saddened to learn of her passing. May God comfort you during this difficult time.

Polly was a wonderful part of my life growing up at Grove Avenus Methodist Church. The Bondurants, Penningtons, Dyers, Corns - so many contributed to who I am and to my mothers happiness. My mother (Willie Nolley Dole) was secretary at the church for 20 years and dealt with Polly on a daily basis -so I heard about her a lot - all good! When I returned from the military, Polly helped me get re-admitted to Tech (forever greatful!). And wheh mom retired & returned to Radford, she lived at Ralph & Polly's apartments. Polly invited her to join a bridge table & mom also fell in love with the game. Hearing them discuss tricks from weeks before always amazed me.
I pray peace & joy for the family knowing the the love she shared will never die.

John, Paula Sue and family, I am very sad for your loss. Most of my 25 years that I lived in Radford are encircled by the memories of Polly and Ralph. They begin as a little boy chasing golf balls for them at their Monroe Terrace home, and it ends with the memories of your mother on Radford City Council. God be with you, but their memories will endure forever. Sincerely, Todd Bruce and Family

Paula and John, I am sorry to hear about your mom. Know that one day you will see her again. I remember her as a kind loving person who probably never met a stranger. Remember: "They that wait upon the Lord will renew their strength, they will mount up with wings like eagles, they will run and not be weary, they will walk and not faint". Isaiah 40:31
My thoughts and prayers are with you during this time.

Mrs. Corn was one of the most gracious, fun, interesting and dynamic personalities I ever encountered. A great example to all of us - and yes, all of kids were taking notes. I am so sorry to hear of her passing. Paula Sue and John, my thoughts and prayers are with you - you had one heck of a Mom!

The first time we heard of Polly Corn, it was "Grandmommy" for her loving title. Later, she was even, Gigi (Great-Grandma). Her brilliance was seen in her many successful life hats and careers; her love was seen and is displayed by her children, grandchildren, and great-granchildren.

May God give you His peace and the memory of happy times as you grieve.

Mrs. Corn was a wonderful role model for me as a student at Radford College during the 1960's. I was studying to become a business teacher, and she was so encouraging. During that time, I wished that I could be half as good as a teacher as she had been to me. I have thought of her many times over the years. I remember her telling our class about going into a business in downtown Radford where one of her high school students worked. The student wasn't at her desk at the time. Mrs. Corn said she saw a letter left on the desk typed by her former student. The letter had many errors in it. Mrs. Corn said she took out her red pen, circled the errors, placed it back on the desk, and left the office without seeing the former student. Mrs. Corn told us she was sure the former student realized later who had been there. Mrs. Corn was a graceful and beautiful lady. Those of us who "sat at her feet" are truly better for having known her at Radford College.

My thoughts and prayers are with you, her family.
