Stephen Sewell Obituary
August 20, 1936 - September 25, 2024
Major General Stephen H. Sewell Jr., MG USA, Ret. of Roanoke, VA passed away on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at the age of 88.
General Sewell was raised in Statesboro, GA, attended Duke University followed by Virginia Military Institute, where he graduated in 1959. He spent 34 years in the Active Army Reserves. Steve had numerous business interests and was active in several non-profit organizations.
Steve married Patricia A. Chumley of Knoxville, TN in 1959, and together raised a loving family. Unfortunately, he was preceded in death by his wife, Pat, and their son, Christopher Wynn Sewell. Steve along with Pat spent many joyful hours at the lake and remained an avid supporter, including travel to cheer on his favorite sports teams: VMI Keydets and Duke Blue Devils.
Steve leaves behind his son, Stephen H. Sewell III and his wife, Caroline A. Sewell; daughter, Sheri S. Vaughn and her husband, Paul C. Vaughn; daughter-in-law, Laura Sewell; grandchildren, Brandon (Ashley) Sewell, Brian (Nikki) Sewell, Taylor (Greg) Moore, Garrett Vaughn, Cameron (Julia) Vaughn, Harrison and Julia Sewell; and great-grandchildren, Ella, Claire, Camden and Graham Sewell, Finley, Olivia and Mason Moore. His legacy of love will live on through each of them.
A visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m., on Friday, October 4, 2024, at Oakey's South Chapel, located at 4257 Brambleton Ave., Roanoke, VA 24018. Services to honor Steve's life will be held 10 a.m., on Saturday, October 5, 2024, at Grandin Court Baptist Church followed by a short reception. Burial will be held at Sherwood Memorial Park.
The family requests, in lieu of flowers, gifts be made to the charity of their choice. Condolences may be shared with his family by visiting www.Oakeys.com.
