Susan Howell Obituary

Susan Carol Taylor Howell, 59, of Blacksburg, passed away quietly on Saturday, June 23, 2007 at home surrounded by her family. Born July 15, 1947 in the Bronx, New York to Louise Taylor and the late Fred Taylor, Jr., she is also survived by her husband of 40 years, John Howell; daughter and son-in-law, Heather Howell and Rodolfo Long; son, Ian Howell; daughter, son-in-law, and grandson, Christena Howell, Shankara Pandey, and Samundra Holden Pandey; son and daughter-in-law, Remi and Amoreena Ranck Howell; brother, Fred Arthur Taylor; nephew, Chris Taylor and his wife Nancy Taylor; and niece, Lisa Taylor Rich and her husband Steve Rich. Susie and John moved in 1979 with their young family from Bloomington, Indiana to Blacksburg, where Susie's dedication to the musical education of children took many forms. She taught at the Montessori Children's House and Primary School, taught private recorder lessons to students of all ages and backgrounds, and for 12 years directed the Children's Choir and the Choristers of Christ Episcopal Church. She was a longtime member of the Blacksburg Master Chorale. She was a founding director and organizer of the Singing Children of Blacksburg, a festival that brought together children's choirs from a number of area churches. Her greatest joy was sharing her love of music with children. A service of remembrance will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 26, 2007 at Christ Episcopal Church at 120 Church Street in Blacksburg. A reception will follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to your church's children's choir program. Arrangements by McCoy Funeral Home, Inc.

My prayers and deepest sympathy to the Howell family. Susie and I were friends, classmates and apartment mates at Indiana University. I was awestruck by her incredible musicality, captivated by her delightful sense of humor, and delighted to be among her many friends. I am grateful to have known her.

Working with Susie at Christ Church was a joy; she stretched my appreciation and imagination. She has nurtured a love of music in generations of children and has educated a few clergy along the way. Thanks Susie..

Susie was a great influence in my life and memories of her will forever be held dear in my heart. Without Susie, I would not have known the joy of singing. She taught me so much, both in music and in life. My prayers and thoughts are with you all.
Much love - Kathy

My heart warms when I think back to the years in choir under her directing. She inspired and instilled in me such a love of singing and offering my voice in music of praise and worship of the Lord. I owe a debt of gratitude to the hours Susie spent working with me, teaching me and sharing her love of music and children. To God be the glory!!

I have just arrived home after being away, and heard from Elizabeth of Susie's death. I was so sorry to hear of Susie's illness and death. Susie was such an inspiration to me when I was a member of Christ Church Blacksburg. When I left Blacksburg to move to Toronto, she wrote a beautiful Eucharistic setting for the Sisters of St. John the Divine -- one of the many ways in which I will remember her.

To John and all the family -- my prayers are with you. You will miss her so much because you loved her so much -- that is the mystery and pain of love and death. May the love of Jesus uphold you.

My sister, Elizabeth, sent me the sad news and today the web address for the obituary. My thoughts and prayers will be with you, especially at the time of the funeral. I wish I could be there to sing in the choir. I have here a huge pile of music, borrowed from the Christ Church library, most of which was acquired by Susie. What fortunate children to have sung and learned under her guidance in music! It was a gift to have known her. My mother and father will surely be glad to see her again, whole and happy and singing!

Onward & upward with music,
Ann Montgomery Carter
