Thomas Turner Obituary

Thomas D. (Doug) Turner, 73, of Bassett, died Friday, November 20, 2009, at his home. He was born on January 3, 1936, to the late Robert L. Turner and the late Iris P. Turner. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald Clay Turner and Robert Dewey Turner; and four sisters, Dorothy Marie Turner, Margaret Jean Turner, Vivian Louise Knott, and Marie E. Whorley. He was in the National Guard. He worked for J. D. Bassett Furniture from 1958 to 1970, and then began his 30 year career as a conductor for Norfolk and Southern Railroad. He was a member of Bassett Church of God and attended Collinsville Pentecostal Holiness Church. He is survived by his wife, Rachel P. Turner, of the home; one son, Thomas D. Turner II, of Rocky Mount; five sisters, Frances Lawrence, Mable McBride and Susan Biege, all of Martinsville, Elva Haskins and Myrtle Turner, both of Collinsville; four brothers, Billy L. Turner, of Martinsville, Lloyd Turner, of Ridgeway, Wilbur Turner, of Eden North Carolina, and Joseph Turner, of Elizabethtown, Ky. A visitation has been scheduled for Sunday November 22, 2009, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the South Chapel of Bassett Funeral Service. The funeral will be Monday, November 23, 2009, at 4 p.m. in the South Chapel of Bassett Funeral Service with the Rev. Harold Brown and the Rev. Dan Woods officiating. Burial to follow in Mountain View Cemetery with full military honors conducted by the Martinsville and Henry Co. Honor Guard. On-line condolences may be sent to www.bassettfuneralservice.com. My deerest sweet uncle/brother. You are now gone to heaven and may you be at peace. You will be sadly missed by all your loved ones left behind. All we have is your memories and may we cherish each and every one. I love you Doug. My sincerest condolences to Tommy, may you find strength and courage in God's love to help heal your broken heart. Your Dad loved you so much and he will be with you forever. Love Susan.
