George Warren Obituary
This obituary was lovingly prepared by the family.
George Thomas Warren, II went to be with Christ on Sunday July 13, 2025. He professed Christ as Lord at age 9 and carried His seal the rest of his life. He taught Sunday School for years and was ordained a Baptist minister in 2014 to evangelize, though he never pastored.
He was born in Atlanta, GA on May 18, 1937 to Lovic Cyril Warren, Jr. of Atlanta, son of L.C. Warren, Sr. and Sadie Neal Warren, and the former Alfreda Oliver Bell, daughter of Dr. James A. Bell, Sr. and Blanche Ragsdale Bell of Lithonia, GA.
In 1955, he graduated Decatur High School and married the former Jacquelyn McWilliams of Decatur, GA, who was the mother of his three sons and predeceased him. In 1962, he graduated from Georgia State University with a Bachelor of Business Administration in marketing with a minor in insurance, having attended night school for 7 years, while raising their first two sons.
For 12 years after graduation from high school, he worked for his father's company, L.C. Warren Refrigeration in Atlanta. When the company was sold in 1968, he started George Warren & Associates, a firm that marketed real estate, insurance, and corporate securities. He became a Certified Financial Planner in 1996, and retired in 2000. He was awarded Georgia Realtor of the Year in 1976 and served as Georgia Multiple Listing Service president from 1979-1980.
In 1972, he was elected a Republican Georgia State Senator from the 43rd District in DeKalb County and served two consecutive terms. Among other laws he authored or co-sponsored, he wrote the Georgia law which allows spouses to take real estate title as joint survivors with right of survivorship, allowing couples of lesser means the opportunity to avoid Probate Court when inheriting the balance of ownership. As the first non-attorney allowed to serve on the Senate Special Judiciary Committee, he helped write a new death penalty law to replace one thrown out by the US Supreme Court. Under the new law, after a murder conviction by jury, jurors must then consider 10 mitigating and 10 aggravating circumstances before voting for a death penalty. That law still exists in Georgia today. Warren gave up his state senate seat to run unsuccessfully for the U S Congress in 1976. Although he won the Republican primary nomination, he was defeated in the Jimmy Carter presidential landslide in Georgia that election year.
In 2001, he married the former Beverly Gale Roberts, born in Blakely, GA to Quinton Roberts and the former Mary Hazel Moore. In 2006, he and wife Gale moved to Madison, GA. His survivors are his wife, Gale, his sons, George T. Warren, III and wife Lisa, Jeffrey Hunt Warren, and Daniel Forrest Warren and wife, Mary. He leaves four grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and many cousins, nieces and nephews as well as brother L.C. Warren III, and sisters Cherry Warren Wardwell and Sadie Warren Crymes.
At his request, his remains will be cremated, with a private family funeral at Westview Cemetery in Atlanta. A Memorial Service for friends and relatives will be held at 3:00 o'clock Sunday, July 20, 2025 at East Newton Baptist Church located at 11290 US Hwy 278, Covington, GA. 30014. A visitation will be held from 2:00PM until 3:00PM at the church prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made in George's memory to his beloved church, East Newton Baptist Church.
