William "Bill" Winfield

Lanier as a Sales Executive for the Christian Purchasing Network. Bill was a member of Saint Benedict Catholic Church where he served on the Parish Council Board and assisted with RCIA, was involved with the Cursillo Movement and Marriage Encounter, was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 939, and the Respect Life Committee. He helped organized the Angel Tree annually to assist children in need at Christmas. Bill was a Board member of the original Life Chain Committee; Co-Founder of Family Advisory Council on Sex Education (FACE), an Abstinence-Based Program in the North Carolina Public Schools. The Abstinence Until Marriage Bill that was passed by the North Carolina Legislature grew out of FACE. The funeral service will be held on Friday, May 1, 2009, at Saint Benedict Catholic Church at 10:30 am with Father James Duong and Monsignor Joseph Showfety officiating. The interment will be on Saturday, May 2, 2009 at Saint Paul Catholic Church in New Bern, NC, at 10:30 a.m. with Father Ernest Ruede officiating. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Winfield in 1953 and Florence Elliott in 2002; and his stepfather, Michael Jowdy, in 1969; and his mother-in-law Beverly Benners Lupton. He is survived by his wife of forty three years, Linda, his children, Bill Winfield, III and wife, Nicole, of New Bern; Leigh Ann Allred and husband, Scott, of Ridgeway, VA; Amber Roberts and husband, Rick, of Richmond, VA; and Michael Winfield of Greensboro; fourteen grandchildren; one surviving uncle, Ernest Elliott and wife, Gladys, of Bridgeport, Connecticut; and father-in-law Billy Benners. Bill was a champion tennis player having attended college on a Tennis Scholarship, and enjoyed walking, boating, golfing and camping with family and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to North Carolina Right to Life, P.O. Elm Street, Greensboro, NC 27401 in his memory. The visitation will be Thursday, April 30, 2009 at Hanes Lineberry N. Elm Chapel from 7:00 - 8:30 pm. The rosary will be at 6:45 pm.
