Joy Redmond Obituary

Joy Byington Redmond, age 77, of Marietta, GA, passed away Monday, July 21, 2025.

Joy and her twin sister Jimmie were born on August 30, 1947, in Atlanta, GA to the late James Augustus Byington and Lena Green Byington. Joy grew up in Forest Park, GA and graduated with honors from Forest Park High School. She finished her education at Berry College in Rome, GA and graduated with high honors in Biology. She was also a member of the Berry College Concert Choir and The Berry Singers. She began her teaching career in Gwinnett County in 1971 and then started teaching in Cobb County in 1974. She taught Science in the middle school grades and although it wasn't her major, she excelled and took her science classes to the State Championship on several occasions. She was Teacher of the Year multiple times at Mabry and McClesky Schools. She retired after 30 years of faithful service. She served as President of the CCAE from 1995-1996 and continued to work with the CCAE in administrative duties after retirement.

She married Bill Redmond on March 21, 1970 and together they raised 2 beautiful daughters. Bill's work at Hewlett Packard required extensive travel over the southeast and other parts of the US and Caribbean, sometimes being away for extended periods of times but Joy always managed to take care of their children, keep up with the housekeeping and teach school.

Joy is remembered for being the most unselfish person who asked for little but gave very much to her family and friends. Joy had a special love and talent for playing the piano. A piano was the first item added when they built a house, and she played it up to several weeks prior to her passing. She loved crossword puzzles, working with flowers, travelling to Europe, Caribbean Islands, Pacific Islands, Florida Keys, California, and especially to Colorado to spend time with her daughter Jamie. She also loved going to the UGA football games in Athens.

She is survived by her husband, Bill Morris Redmond; her daughters, Renee Westmoreland and Jamie Redmond; her grandson, Alex Westmoreland; her great granddaughter, Cassandra Westmoreland; her sisters, Jimmie Jenkins (Terry) and Jane Chaffin (Ron); her nephew, Wesley Chaffin; and her nieces, Lori Hale, Kelly Weathers, and Tiffany Swales.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 28, 2025, at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of Daniel's Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Wax Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Daniel's Funeral Home on Monday prior to the service from 1:00 pm until the service time.

Bill, Jimmie, Jane, Renee, Jamie & family; I was shocked to hear Joy went into hospice. The last time I saw her was at my own mother's funeral. It breaks my heart and I grieve for each of you. It's tragic she wasn't granted more time. But nobody could say she didn't live her life to the fullest. While I will not be able to attend, I will be thinking about each of you during this time and hope you can all know peace again. I love y'all, she will be missed
