David Compo Obituary

Port Leyden - David H. Compo, III, 74, passed away peacefully on December 27, 2023 at the Lutheran Nursing Home in Clinton, NY.

David was born on February 28, 1949 at Sunset Nursing Home in Constableville he was the son of David H. Compo, Jr. and Patricia Doster Compo. David grew up as a baby boomer along with his brother John M. Compo and two sisters Susan Compo Marmon Duran of Deland, Florida and Margaret A. Compo. He went to Port Leyden Elementary School and graduated from South Lewis Central School in Turin. A kind and caring man, David spent his years living in Port Leyden and dedicating his life to his family. On February 2, 1997, David married Lois Mowry a Rome native. They took their vows from his cousin, Justice Ted McCall in Lyonsdale.

David was patriotic and proudly served our country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was with the Company D, 229th Assault Helicopter B, First Calvary Division. His working career was with the IUOE, District 545, Local 158 as an Operating Engineer retiring in 1995 due to a health condition. There were many construction jobs where he had the privilege of working with his father. In June he was recognized for his 55 years with the union.

When time allowed, David was at camp enjoying the outdoors, playing with his toys (tractors, 4-wheeler, RTV, dozer) and being an avid hunter. He liked to reminisce about the old days when he and his buddies played cards and partied at camp. His other interests were coin collecting, model car collecting, watching football and NASCAR on TV, gardening and just keeping busy. David adored the company of his loving pets and loved to joke around and visit with family and friends. In between working and playing, he could be found doing his signups and having beverages (and maybe playing cards) with his friends at the local establishments.

He was a life member of the Boonville Elks and the Harland J. Hennessey Veterans of Foreign Wars in Boonville.

David is predeceased by his parents and is survived by his wife, brother and sisters. He also leaves behind his nieces and nephews: Bethann Mooney Harris, Melissa Compo, Jennifer Compo Barnes, John Compo, Heidi Marmon Dugan, Paul Marmon and David Duran; his great nieces and nephews: Tyler Compo, Max Podkowka, Kaitlyn Podkowka and Halley Compo. He will be missed by all.

There will be no services per David's wishes and burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Port Leyden. Donations in David's name may be made to Lewis County Humane Society, P.O. Box 682, Lowville, NY 13367. Mills Funeral Home, Boonville is in charge of the arrangements. For an online message of sympathy please go to www.millsfuneralhomes.com.
