David A. Schober, 71, a.k.a. Pop Pop of Rome, NY, passed away like a true "Fightin Phil" on Thursday, August 8, 2024 at WYNN Hospital in Utica, NY. He was born in Woodbury, New Jersey on March 21, 1953, a son of the late Frank and Elizabeth (Cogan) Schober, Jr. He grew up in the Pitman-Glassboro area playing and working on the family apple farm early on to then excelling in the sports he loved of Football, Baseball, and Track. After graduating at Pitman High School in June 1971, Dave enlisted in the United States Air Force on August 27, 1971. He proudly served his country as a Load Crew Member, Munitions Specialist and was Honorably Discharged on January 11, 1974, at Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, New York.

Dave Settled in Rome and continued to work at Griffiss Air Base as a Civilian for many years. He also bartended at JJ's Bar in Rome for over 20 years where many friends were made and lasting for the next 50 years. He then began a career with the NYS Department of Labor in Utica eventually retiring. Our dad was an avid sports fan of the Philadelphia Eagles, Phillies, and Villanova. That passion was shared with his children and grandsons creating a special bond by always talking and texting during games over the years with many laughs and some tears. Dave and I met and became friends when I was in middle school and we were members at the same lake. We ran into each other later when I was a sophomore in high school and was a candy striper and he came into the hospital ER with his mom. They gave me a ride home and we dated for a while after that. Then, sometime ago, we reconnected on Facebook and messaged each other back-and-forth. Dave was always one of the nicest and funniest guys I´ve ever known, and never failed to make me smile and laugh. I was completely shocked when I went on his Facebook page to see if he had posted because I hadn´t heard from him in a couple of weeks and learned that he had passed away. So many times recently, I´ve seen a joke or a funny meme, or had a question or comment about the Phillies and started to send it to him, and then remembered. He will certainly be missed.
