Gary Breen Obituary

Gary M. Breen, age 41 of Rome passed away unexpectedly on Friday, December 6th, 2024.

Gary was born on January 18, 1983, in Utica, to Beth Roach and Patrick Breen, and resided in Rome, where he became a cherished member of the community. A dedicated and hardworking individual, Gary was immensely proud of his role as a Regional Transportation Supervisor for The Grand Healthcare System throughout New York. On April 1, 2011, he was united in marriage to the former Kortney Drake, and though they were married only for 13 years, their journey began nine years prior.

Beyond his professional achievements, Gary was known for his infectious love of life and his giving nature. He found joy in participating in the Rome Men's Softball League and also enjoyed golfing, football, hockey, and camping. An avid lover of Disney movies, Gary always carried a childlike wonder and enthusiasm for life's simple pleasures.

Gary's commitment to sports was reflected in his role as an assistant coach for Rome girls' softball, and also was a Rome Pop Warner Cheerleading coach, where he was affectionately known as "Chuncle." In addition, he proudly co-founded the Marco Carletta Foundation, showcasing his enduring dedication to making a difference.

A man with a big heart, Gary treasured time spent with his family, especially during large gatherings where his laughter and love filled the room. He was known for his supportive nature and would do anything for anyone in need.

Gary is survived by his loving wife, Kortney; his sons, Dominick (Rebecca), Kailib, and Cameron; his granddaughter, Lila; his parents; his siblings, Keith (Kayla), Justin, Rhiana (Courtney), Kristin (Johnny), Patrick Jr., Vicky, Jessica, and Desiraye; his in laws, Brittany (Mike), Tim (Tonja), DJ (Heather), and Amanda; special cousins who were like his brothers, Jesse Malison and Timmy Breen; a special niece who was also his bff, Brooklynn; and many nieces, nephews, and friends including his very good friends, Chris and Adam Carletta, Ryan and Tara Nutting, Mike Bogacz, Rich and Ashley Brockway, and Jason "Big Jay" Jaegers.

Visitation for Gary will be held at the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street, Thursday from 4 to 7 PM, where his family invites those who knew and loved Gary to celebrate his incredible life and legacy. He leaves behind a community richer for having known him and a family eternally grateful for the love they shared.

In lieu of flowers, donations May be made to the Marco Carletta Foundation, Rome Shop with a Cop, and/or Rome Colts Cheerleading.

I have far too many great memories with Gary from work, but one of my favorites was when I was working a double on Valentine´s day he made sure he came into work with chocolate strawberries and a card for a few of us up front. He was one who always cheered me on in nursing school, and always made sure I knew how appreciated my work was.
