Gertrude Szczesniak Obituary
Gertrude (Trudy) Szczesniak, 85, of Utica and formerly of Whitesboro, passed away at St. Luke's Home on April 6, 2025 with her beloved family at her side.
Trudy was born and raised in Utica, the daughter of Herman and Anna Gudyka Washburn. Born on Veteran's Day, she loved her country and her Catholic faith. On May 25, 1963, Trudy married Thaddeus (Ted) Szczesniak. After 44 years and a beautiful life together, God called Ted home on December 15, 2007.
Trudy retired from Verizon in 1990, after 30+ years of service as an operator. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers. Trudy was Past President of the Whitestown American Legion Post 1113 Auxiliary and Oneida County Past President and Unit President, where she chaired many committees and made lifelong friends throughout the years.
Trudy is survived by her daughters, Kathleen (Mathew) Leslie of Utica, Linda (Brian) Hill of Whitesboro, and Julie (James) Slaga of Rome; and beloved canine daughter, Dolly. She leaves her grandchildren, Jessica (Simeon) Steward, Amanda (Richard) Duff, Jacob Johnson (Dale Romleski), Katelynn Johnson, Brett Hill and Kaylee Hill; and her great-grandchild, Bruce Ole Steward. Trudy is also survived by her sister, Patricia (Peter) Walchusky; and brothers-in-law, Alfred Matys, Thomas Szczesniak and Casimir (Karen) Szczesniak; and cherished godchildren, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Lorraine Matys; brother, Frank (+Carol) Washburn; sisters-in-law, Therese(+Robert) Stevener and Delores Szczesniak; and brothers-in-law, Gene (+Jennie) Szczesniak and Alvin (+Anne) Szczesniak.
The family would like to thank the caring staff of St. Luke's Home and the many residents who befriended Mom in the past year. We also thank Mom's former Hollywood Drive neighbors, Bud and Sherry Listas for their support and kindness to Mom throughout the years.
Funeral services will be held on Friday at 10:30 a.m., at The Church of the Sacred Heart & St. Mary, Our Lady of Czestochowa, New York Mills, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will be in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Yorkville. Family and friends are invited to call at Dimbleby Funeral Homes, Inc., 40 Main St., Whitesboro, on Thursday from 4:00-7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude's Children Research Hospital, or the church of your choice for masses in memory of Trudy and Ted.

TRUDY WAS VERY SPECIAL LADY TO MEAND SWEET FRIEND. I AM A RESIDENT OF MVHS SAINT LUKES NURSING HOME. TRUDY WAS IN THE NEXT ROOM. SHE ALWAYS HAD A SMILE FOR ME. I WOULD KISS HER HAND AND SAY I LOVE YOU TRUDY. SHE WILL ALWAYS BE IN MY HEART AND THOUGHTS .TRUDY WILL LIVE FOREVER IN MY MEMORY. I WILL MISS HER VERY MUCH. MAY GOD BLESS YOU, THANK YOU TO ALL OF HER DAUGHTERS FOR LETTING ME SHARE YOUR MOM WITH ME. YOU ALL ARE VERY SPECIAL TO ME AS WELL. LOVE GRACE MYERS.
