John Histed Obituary
John S. Histed, was born to Edward and Lillian Histed on March 22, 1934 in Ithaca, NY. He died on Monday, July 14, 2025, at the age of 91.
John attended Ithaca High School, and graduated from Cascadilla Prep School in 1952. Mr. Histed earned a Bachelor's degree from Cornell University School of Hotel Administration. On June 11, 1955, he was united in marriage to Margaret Jane Lisenring, at Immaculate Conception Church, Ithaca. She died in 2016. Mr. Histed had a twenty year career at Statler Inn, beginning in 1955 as a bellboy, and he held the position of Front Office Manager from 1972 until the time of his retirement in 1978. In 1978, the family moved to Alder Creek, NY, where he operated Histed's Alder Creek Inn until 2001. Mr. Histed was a US Army veteran, having served active duty from 1953-1955.
He is survived by his five children and their spouses, John and Anne Histed, Timothy and Regina Histed, Mary and Mark Ritter, Margaret and Michael Stys, and Matthew Histed; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; his sister, Deanna Hubbard-Eggers; sister-in-law, Helen Mary Lisenring; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife; infant son, Patrick; twin sister, Joan Snyder; niece, Richelle Hubbard; and daughter-in-law Stacey.
Family and friends are invited to call on the family on Saturday, August 2, from 10:00-11:30 a.m., at Dimbleby Funeral Homes Inc., 40 Main Street, Whitesboro. You are also invited to join the family at The Chowder House, 57 Burrstone Rd., New York Mills, from 12:00-3:00 p.m., to celebrate John's life. Interment in Pine Grove Cemetery, Lansing, NY will be held at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, please consider memorials in his name to Anita's Stevens-Swan Humane Society, 5664 Horatio St., Utica, NY 13502.
