Grandpa and me when i was a few months

My Recreations of Billy Joe Carlton (Grandpa)

My grandfather was a very strong willed man. He was a significant part of my life. He always made sure I had what I needed, and that I distinguished that difference between what I need and what I want. He always made sure I had food on the table and clothes on my back. He also taught me a lot of life skills, and modeled a good work ethic for me. He was the most influential male in my life. He taught me how to maintain vehicles and small gas engines. He taught me how to do numerous repairs to the home. He showed me the ins and outs of

keeping a good lawn and garden.
I have various memories about my grandfather that I will always hold deep in my heart. I can remember when I was very young he would take me to the donuts shop where he and his friends would meet, he would let me pick out my favorite donuts and then I would sit on his lap while he had coffee with his friends and chow down my donuts.

On my 10th birthday he surprised me with a fishing pole then he took me fishing with him, something when I was a kid I always dreamed of doing with him, so the night before we got the boat and all the tackle ready. Off we set at 5:00am. We had a forty mile trip to the lake, so he took me to McDonalds for breakfast, witch surprised me. (Grandpa was not one for eating out.) So we got to the lake and got to fishing. We sat there for 3 hours before we got a single bite. Then he told me to come back and drive the boat. I was so thrilled being so young and doing something so grown up. We ended up catching 2 fish that day. But it was one of the best days of my life.

My grandfather meant the world to me. I loved him with all of my heart. Even though the recent years we had some issues, which I settled with him. He always loved me unconditionally. He always tried to steer me in the right path. He told me I need to go to school that I had a lot of potential. The last few years I didn't get to spend a lot of time with him due to the consequences of my actions of being a drug use. The last time I seen him was in December. Before I had to serve the remainder of my time. I would speak to him on the phone time to time. The last time I spoke on the phone with him was the hardest. It was about a week before he past. I told him that I loved him and thanked him for being a father to me. He kept asking me when I would come home, I told him in a few months and that I was with him in hart. The last thing he said to me was that he loved me and that I was his pride and joy, and made me promise him that I would do right and take care of my mother and grandmother.

I love you so much grandpa, you mean so much to me. Thank you for being such a big part of my life and let your soul live on for eternity. Your memories will always be with me and I will never forget the influence you have had on me through my life.
Rest in peace Billy Joe I will always love you,
Adam Bergstadt
