John Startzel Obituary

John Thomas Startzel 1934—2017
John Thomas Startzel passed away November 2, 2017, from complications of post polio syndrome. Born September 11, 1934, in Kansas City, MO to Eileen Thomas Startzel and Charles Byron Startzel. While attending University of Missouri, he married Henrietta Dundee in 1955. John's passion was Bridge. He was a student of the game as well as a teacher. He achieved a Sapphire Life Master in the American Contract Bridge League. After retiring from Montgomery Ward's accounting department, he and his wife traveled the United States selling antiques. After she died, he again took up Bridge, where he met his loving companion, Joan. They enjoyed spending winters in Florida, doing crossword puzzles, eating out, and playing Bridge together. He is survived by his loving companion, Joan P. Bailey-Murray; children, Jennifer, John (Sharon and daughter, Isabella), Laura (children, Jillian and Jessica); grandchildren, James and Joshua. Predeceased by wife Henrietta and daughter, Penny.
In keeping with John's wishes, he is to be cremated and later buried privately. There will be no visitation or service. Instead a celebration of his life will be at a later date. Memorials may go to Rockford University.
