KURT D. SMITH ROSCOE - On Thursday, December 5, 2013, Kurt D. Smith passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family. Kurt was born February 6, 1954, in Belvidere, IL to Donald and Betty (Barr) Smith. A 1972 graduate of Belvidere High School, he excelled in wrestling. After high school he began a long career with Dean Foods in Belvedere, retiring after 38 years in 2013. On June 6,1981, Kurt married Melissa Powers in Poplar Grove, IL. Kurt and Melissa raised 2 sons who currently attend Northern Illinois University. He raised his boys to be avid sports fans, sharing his love of any Detroit team. He was a carpenter at heart who enjoyed golfing, skiing, traveling and being a family man. Kurt's smile will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Melissa; his sons, Andrew and Justin; his brother, Stuart (Joanna) Smith Merrimack, N.H.; his sister, Linda Smith Mitchell, Roscoe, IL; father-in-law, Edward (Audrey) Powers Rockford, IL; mother-in-law, Jean Powers, Roscoe, IL; sisters-in-law, Jennifer (Ken) Jaeger, Garden Prairie, IL, Heather (Tyler) Pearson Rockford, IL; brothers-in-law, Jim (Angela) Powers, Bradenton FL, and Matthew and Jonathon Powers, Rockford, IL; nieces, Kimberly (David) Mainwaring, Jennifer Haschel, Megan Hitt, Casey (Jeremy Try) Johnson, and Chloe Powers; nephews, Jason Smith, Aaron and Nathan Jaeger, and Corbin Pearson; aunts, Carol Larson, CA, Bev (Bob) Carpenter, Belvidere, IL.; cousin, Judith Anderson, Belvidere, IL; several great-nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and his nephews, Brian Smith, and Joseph Connar Powers. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, December 9, 2013, at Cross and Crown Lutheran Church, 7404 Elevator Rd., Roscoe, IL. Funeral services will be held at Cross and Crown Lutheran Church at 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 10, 2013. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family or to the Joey Powers Leukemia Project.
