Marshall Butchart Obituary

Marshall G. Butchart 1926—2018
Marshall G. Butchart, 91, of Rockford, IL, died May 25, 2018, at Alden Debes Nursing Home in Rockford. He was born in Chicago Nov. 8, 1926, on his mother's birthday, to Percy G. and Gladys (Modersohn) Butchart. Marshall lived the first 10 years of his life in Chicago, and then the family moved to Markham, IL, where he grew up and graduated from Thornton High School in 1944. Inducted into the army in December 1944, he served two years in South Korea before returning home in 1947. At this time he met his future wife, Ruth E. Beckstrom. He attended Thornton Junior College for a year, and they were married June 5, 1948. Five children were born to this marriage. The couple moved to Beloit in 1950, and So. Beloit the following year. Marshall worked as a welder at Bartelt Engineering (later Rexham Corp.) in Rockford for many years. In semi-retirement he worked as a maintenance man for apartments. In 1974, he married Mildred Boekholder. Then in 1996, he married Jeanette Mencel. She preceded him in death in 2008. Marshall had a keen mind and wide-ranging interests. He was an avid photographer, voracious reader, car enthusiast, amateur aviator, and in his retirement took up woodworking, gardening and golf. He was a people person and made many close friends throughout his life. He was a member of Second First Church, Rockford. Marshall is survived by four of his children, John Butchart, Ellen Butchart, and Carol (Richard) Potter, all of Beloit, and Charles (Kathy) Butchart of Manitowoc, WI; daughter-in-law, Janine Butchart; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great- grandchild; brother, Russell (Joan) Butchart; sister-in-law, Norma Butchart; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Jeanette; son, Philip Butchart; daughter-in-law, Karen Butchart; brother, William Butchart; and sister-in-law, Lillian. The family would like to thank Mercy Hospice and Tomika for their compassionate care of our Dad and son-in-law, Rich for staying with him, allowing him to be at home for so long.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 3, at Second First Church, 318 N. Church St., Rockford.

Gratefully Thinking of Marshall and his dedication to family and friends, and his kindness to others, especially my Mother, Jeanette, who died in May of 2008. Her 90th birthday would have been June 3, 2008. Now I see that the service celebrating the life of Marshall will be June 3, 2018. Thank you for being part of our family and circle of special friends.
