Michael Carroll Obituary

MICHAEL L. CARROLL, 64 ROCKFORD - Michael L. Carroll, 64, passed on in the comfort of his home on Sunday, November 17, 2013, with his wife, the love of his family and friends and his Golden Retriever, Oscar, by his side, having endured a short and courageous battle with cancer. Mike was born on December 22, 1948, to George "Mike" and Patricia Carroll in Eau Claire, WI. He was raised in the loving family which included 3 siblings, Georgia, Patrick and Daniel. Mike met the love of his life, Helene Schweiker in Madison, WI, in 1969, and they were wed on August 19, 1972, in Wauwatosa, WI. Mike and Helene were blessed with two children, Kathleen Carroll McDermott and Joseph Carroll. Their family has grown to include Kathleen's daughter, Helena Diane, Kathleen's fiancé, Zachary Bevins, Joe's wife, Ashley, and their daughter, Mia Kathleen. Mike's family was always at the center of his heart. Mike graduated from Eau Claire Regis High School in 1967, and then graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1971. He also had two years of post graduate study in law at Marquette University. Mike's career in human resources in Rockford, IL spanned 30 plus years starting with Barber Colman, which later became Smiths Aerospace, retiring as Human Resource Director of GE Aerospace. He continued his career in Human Resources as the Director of HR for Kaney Aerospace. Wherever Mike worked he made friends of colleagues and gained their respect with his honest, caring approach to all employee and company issues. Mike's true passions were his family, his friends, his love of sports and his Fighting Irish. It was at the University of Notre Dame that his parents' values were further instilled: love of God, the importance of education and hard work, and the commitment to one's community. He especially enjoyed the camaraderie and companionship of his golfing scramble group. Traveling with his wife and close dear friends brought him memories that lasted a lifetime. Mike is survived by his wife of 41 years, Helene, his daughter, Kathleen Carroll McDermott (Zachary Bevins), granddaughter, Helena, son, Joseph (Ashley) Carroll, and granddaughter, Mia Kathleen, sister, Georgia Hill, brothers, Patrick Carroll, Daniel (Peggy) Carroll, brother-in-law, Bob (Melissa) Schweiker and nieces, Tricia (Jeffrey) Joines, Jennifer (Chad) Simmons, Kasey (Garrett Alto) Carroll, Claire Schweiker, and nephew, Mathew Schweiker, and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, George "Mike" and Patricia Carroll; father and mother-in-law, Joseph and Helen Schweiker; and brother-in-law, Jim Hill. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Hospice Care of America, the SwedishAmerican nursing staff on 7th and 8th floor, SwedishAmerican Home Health staff, the staff of SwedishAmerican Regional Cancer Center and Rockford Gastroenterology and Associates. Special thanks to Dr. Merat Esfahani, Dr. Michael Manley and close friend, Dr. Richard Nora for his continued friendship and support. Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, November 23, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter's Cathedral, 1243 Church St., with Rev. Carl E. Beekman officiating. Visitation will be held on Friday, November 22, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Mulford Chapel, 1860 S. Mulford Rd., with a Christian Wake service to be recited at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to Boylan Catholic High School, The SwedishAmerican Regional Cancer Center, Eau Claire Regis High School or the University of Notre Dame. 8 years later and I don´t think there has been a day when I don´t talk about Mike or use the lessons he taught me. I think he´d love that Dexter is back.

I met Michael many years ago when he was recruiting for Barber Coleman at the University of Iowa.t I was in grad school and he invited me to come to Rockford for a summer internship back in the early to mid 80s. He was a special man. He was kind, fun, and always extended his hand to those in need. I am blessed than I had the honor of knowing him. May god bless his wife and family. Dr. Larry James

To the Carroll Family and Mike's friends -
It was a great shock when we heard of Mike's condition about a week and a half ago, and great sadness to hear of his passing. I first met Mike ten years ago when he negotiated for our relocation to Rockford to start working at Smiths Aerospace. In the time since, I grew a true appreciation, respect, and friendship with Mike, and enjoyed seeing him in the crowd when I officiated Boylan basketball games. Mike was a man of high integrity and a straight-shooter. Kathy and I will miss a good man, and I will miss my friend.

Dear Helene, I am so shocked and sorry to hear this sad news. I did not know your husband, but I know, from you, that he was a wonderful man, and I know how much you loved him and how precious your life together was from the conversations we all shared at card club. It is so hard to hear this news. Please know that you and your family are in my thoughts and I wish you comfort in these difficult days.

Helene and family,
I was privileged to know Mike for over 25 years. Mike was HR Director at Barber-Colman while I was a production supervisor, so we had many professional discussions that soon turned into friendship. One of the many talents that Mike possessed was the ability to separate professional issues from friendship. When we had a work issue you always knew that you could go to Mike for advice and you would be treated respectfully and fairly. Even when I was sure I knew exactly what to do about some problem I would go to Mike for advice. He could tell me my idea was good or he might point out potential problems and better ways of handling things. He was so good at this that myself and several others would go to Mike with personal issues. We even started calling him "Father Carroll".
Like Ron Soave said, Mike would also stop by my office just to see how I was doing. He knew we were under a lot of pressure and just wanted to know if we were all right or needed to talk. He did the same thing with the rest of the people, spending hours on the production floor answering questions or just seeing if they were OK.
Mike left us too soon. With all of the problems in the world I guess God needed someone with him to make sure he was all right too.

Dear Helene & Family,

I am deeply saddened at hearing of the passing of Mike. I had the pleasure of working with Mike at Smith's / GE Aviation. We had many talks about golf, Notre Dame and life in general. When he found out that my Father had written a book about golf and how I enjoyed the history of golf he brought in a signed letter given to his Father from Bobby Jones. He must have saw my eyes widen and my jaw drop and he laughed. He went on to talk about how his Father did some work for Bobby Jones and he had couple letters like that one. That's the way Mike was always willing to stop and take interest in somebodies life and share a piece of his.

He will be truly missed by all those who had the pleasure to meet him and call him a friend.

My deepest sympathies,

Kevin Gable

Dear Mrs. Carroll:
It is with deep sorrow that I read of the passing of your dear husband. As you know, just two months ago Mike helped me check off one item on my personal bucket list when he sold us his treasured Notre Dame football tickets so that I could take my son to a game. It was one of the best days of my son's life and I have only you and Mike to thank. I could tell that day in our brief meeting that he had a great love for you, his family, and for Notre Dame. May God comfort you and your family at this difficult time.

There are no words to express the gratitude I feel in God giveing me the opportunity to have known Mike Carroll. He started out to be a hair client of mine, in which Heleene had encouraged him to come. She "encouraged" him quite often to come, and I thought it funny that her appointments were most of the time preceding his. Then I realized it was so she could give her input as to how I might approach the cut and styling of Mikes hair. Mike clearly knew his wife, being that he never made an effort communicating his preferance, somehow knowing that had already been taken care of :) Mike and Heleene have both been such a support to me through some incredibly difficult times of life. Mike was always willing to help me with projects I had no idea how to do around my house and his words of wisdom were treasures to me. I'm sure many would agree his sense of humor was amazingly funny and a blessing. There are so many more fun moments to share in my time of knowing the Carrolls and I am grateful for the memories I will always have. Mike, you are, and will be grately missed, thank you for being such an example to many of integrity and honorable character. I will look forward to seeing you again on the otherside of this life.
Most Sincerely,
Karin Meador :)

Dear Helene and family,
I am so very sorry for your loss. Mike was and will always be one of the most influential and guiding forces in many, many parts of my life, and he taught me lessons that I go back to almost every day. I have nothing but the fondest memories of one-on-one heart to heart talks about so many things, and it was not uncommon to discuss business, family, Dickens, Dexter, Roger Clemens, Notre Dame, Jasper and Oscar all in the same 3 minutes. I am so very thankful to have known him, and feel very blessed to have had him at my side for this past year at Kaney Aerospace. Each morning when I'd settle in with my coffee, he'd walk in to my office, close the door, and say "how are you doing?", and we'd talk for a few minutes to sort of set the compass for the journey of the day. It is those few minutes I miss the most right, but some day I hope I can pay it forward as he would want.

My very deepest sympathies,
Ron Soave

Mike was such a terrific person and a real joy to work with over our many years at Barber-Colman! Our deep love for our dogs was a popular theme of our conversations. I am keeping his family in my thoughts and prayers.
