Donald Gilman Obituary

Donald Paul Gilman 82, of Rutland, died February 15, 2016, at his residence.
He was born Dec. 16, 1933, in West Rutland. He attended Rutland High School, where he graduated in 1951. Mr. Gilman married Marie McPhee in 1954. They had five children together.
He retired from the New England Telephone Company after 30 years of service as a journeyman, cable splicer and a local test man. He was an avid hunter both with a rifle and the bow. He had the honor of being the first Vermonter to bag a buck with a bow in its initial year of archery deer hunting.
He enjoyed go-cart racing in the 1960s, and he was also a great fan of snowmobiling and racing. He held a general operators license in Amateur Radio, KBLCMS was his call sign. Later, he moved to Tennessee. He moved back to Vermont, where his heart was, in 2009.
Survivors include Dan Joseph his fiancée, Meredith Kelley, David Paul Gilman his wife, Colleen, and their two children and two great-grandchildren, Dennis Edward Gilman and his wife, Rose; 5 children and 8 grandchildren, Douglas Charles Gilman his wife, Renee, and their child. He is also survived by his sister, Dorothy Knapp, and his former wife of 12 years, Mia Jutta Long.
He is predeceased by his wife, Marie, of 40 years; his son, William Joseph Gilman; his brother, Richard Gilman Jr. of Rutland, Vermont.
There will be no public calling hours. There will be a graveside service with military honors at St. Joseph Cemetery, Rutland, in the spring.
Arrangements are under the direction of Aldous Funeral Home, 44 North Main St., Rutland.
