Robert Westcot Obituary

On September 10, 2011, Robert Octave Westcot of Rutland passed away following a brief illness.

Bob was a lifelong Vermonter who enjoyed hunting and fishing, driving country roads, catching up on local news with friends over coffee, and he was particularly fond of picking wild mushrooms and berries, and searching for artifacts. He was a volunteer timer and gatekeeper for ski races in the ‘70s.

Bob attended Christ the King School and graduated from Mount St. Joseph Academy class of 1945.

Bob served as a Navy medical corpsman in Saipan and Japan in the late ‘40s, and then worked as a lineman for Central Vermont Public Service until his retirement.

Bob always had a soft spot for the less fortunate and never forgot his roots.

Bob was born on July 27, 1929, to Ira Carlos and Alice S. (LaVallee) Westcot in Rutland, and was a descendant of Stukely Westcott, one of 13 original proprietors of the Rhode Island Colony.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Linda of South Pasadena, Calif.; his sister, Mary Carol; and his brother, Arthur. Survivors include his wife, Margaret of Rutland; sons Robert Westcot, M.D., and his wife Deborah and their children Stephanie and Matthew of Kennebunk, Maine, and Thomas Westcot and his wife Arvina of Vienna, Va., his sister, Margaret Firminger and her husband Robert; cousins and nieces Carol Ann and Alicia, and nephews David, Michael, Robert, Timothy, Sean and Robert.

Funeral services will be held Friday, September 23, at 11:00 a.m. at Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland. Officiating will be Rev. Marshall Hudson-Knapp.

The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Doctors Without Borders, www.doctorswithoutborders.com, 333 7th Ave., 2nd Floor, New York, NY 10001-5004; or the Vermont Land Trust, www.vlt.org, 8 Bailey Ave., Montpelier, VT 05602.

Although I unfortunately had not seen Uncle Bob in too many years, the phone calls we had brightened my day as he reminded me so much of my dad, his brother, Art. I hope you are both enjoying laughing together. Much love to Aunt Marge from the Russell family.

Marge and Family,
I was saddened to learn of Bob's passing. I think back to those years at the airport and always enjoyed the time we spent flying around New England or traveling the roads of Vermont. When we visited Vermont each year, I looked forward to catching up with Bob at Sewards. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

My sincere condolences to Margaret, Peg and all of Bob's surviving family. He was a great guy and so talented and quietly efficient like his dad...a good man from a great family of friends and neighbors. God rest his soul and bless you all with His love and peace.
