Alan Solbert Obituary

SOLBERT, Alan Goodrich Kirk

Passed away unexpectedly on November 30, 2006, in Salt Lake City. Born April 9, 1950, to Peter O.A. and Deborah K. Solbert in New York City, he is survived by his wife H. Marion Solbert; children Victoria E. C. Solbert, Kevan Samsam, and Shayan Samsam; mother Deborah K. Solbert; siblings Leslie Solbert-Fogg, Elizabeth Solbert-Sheldon, Alison Solbert Paine and Christopher O. N. Solbert; many nieces and nephews; and numerous other family members and dear friends.

Alan graduated from Groton School in Massachusetts and received his Bachelor of Science from Yale University and his Masters of Science from Texas A&M University. While working for the Bureau of Reclamation in Amarillo, Texas, Alan met and married Marion, who would become his beloved wife of 22 years. After the birth of their daughter, Victoria, the family relocated to Sacramento, Calif., for his work on the Kesterson Wildlife Refuge contamination project. Alans success with the Kesterson project led to his future career at Jones & Stokes, one of the premier environmental consulting firms in the Western United States. At Jones & Stokes Alan earned a reputation for his integrity and leadership skills, which became evident when he was voted to the Board of Directors. At the time of his death, Alan was a Principal at Jones & Stokes and the Chairman of the Board of Directors.

Alan lived an active life. He had many interests including sailing, fly fishing, skiing, diving, tennis, wine tasting, kayaking and hiking. These interests were always enjoyed with his family.

On Friday, Dec. 8, at 2:00 PM, a memorial service will be held on the deck of the Delta King, 1000 Front Street, Old Sacramento. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Nature Conservancy, Attn: Treasury (web/support), 4245 N. Fairfax Dr., Suite 100, Arlington, VA 22203, (800) 628-6860. www.nature.org.

Trina and I loved our moments with Alan in Amarillo and were grateful to see his family on their journey to California. Our daughter, Penny, was born in 1985 just like Victoria. Gone too soon.

Alan was a good friend from the moment I met him in January 1980. He would tell me stories of his exploits both in graduate school and through our work. (I pushed him to finish his Masters work before his professor retired.) His boat trip from Oklahoma through the lower Mississippi with Hugh Winder and little Hugh had to be emblazoned in his memory(due to the mosquitoes and Hugh's love of Spam).
It was great to see most of you on the big 1985 move from Amarillo to Sacramento (with a stop at our home in the Las Vegas area). Victoria was only 3 months old then and our first daughter was about to be born.
I remember our last visit together in May 1987. The tour of the Napa Valley vinyards before the tourism took hold was wonderful.
Our deepest sympathy and prayers are for your lovely family. Alan's love of life is what I carry with me forever.

I recently had the pleasure and good fortune to meet and work with Alan. His knowledge, dedication, enthusiasm, and wit was an inspiration. I will miss him greatly having only known him for a short few months. I can only imagine what a loss it is for his close friends and his family. I extend you my most heartfelt sorrow.

I had the great pleasure of meeting Alan during some strategy meetings with Jones & Stokes last summer. He took us on a tour of Napa and we had a wonderful time. What a great guy! My sincerest condolences to the family and those who had the privilege of working with him.

To the Solbert Family,
I have only met with Alan in person one time, in October 2006. Upon meeting him and speaking with him on the telephone a few times, I was struck by the depth of his humility and intellect. Please accept my sincere sympathies.

To all the Solberts,

What a terrible loss! Alan was so full of energy, laughs and love -- it does not seem possible that he is gone. Know that all of Cold Spring Harbor, the East Woods School Community, and especially all the Lindsays are with you in spirit and send you all our sympathy.

The first time I met Alan was one month ago at an environmental meeting and I was immediately stuck by his kindness and motivating personality. I was new to his business and he quickly assumed a position as being a mentor and leader to me. I was fortunate to enjoy a few social occasions with Alan where we connected on our philosophy of business and life. Although brief, I will always hold his insights as a guiding light.

Marion and Victoria -
We were so sorry to hear the sad news. Alan was such a wonderful husband, father, and friend. We truly admired his sense of humor, his humility, and his commitment to family. We will be there on Saturday for the celebration of his life. God bless you both and we pray that your fond memories give you peace and solace during this difficult time. Much love, Carol, Ron, and Meredith

To the Solbert family:
I am shocked and saddened by the news of Alan's passing. He has always been such a pleasure to work with over the years and was a positive influence on those around him. He contributed his leadership skills and considerable talents to many important public works projects in the community. While the many of us who worked with Alan will miss his friendship and contributions, it pales in comparison to your family's loss. My condolences to all of you in this time of grief.

Alan, I have not known you very long, but I feel blessed to have worked with you on Reclamation's Shortage EIS during the last six months. I found you to be one of the most sincere, loyal, ethical, and brilliant men that I have ever meet. I looked up to and trusted you like I would a father, and I always thought that your children were extremely lucky to have a dad like you! The advice you gave me during our business trips and your energy for life, I hope to keep with me forever. I send my sympathy to your family and loved ones, as I know you will be more than greatly missed!
