Albert RODDA Obituary

RODDA, Jr., Albert S.
Passed away peacefully on Saturday April 3, 2010 in his residence after visits from family members and close friends. Albert was born in Sacramento on July 23, 1912. He was predeceased by his loving wife Clarice Horgan. He is survived by his daughter Mary Willert and husband Gary Willert, son Steven Rodda and wife Barbara, daughter Margaret Rodda and John van de Erve, grandchildren Joshua, Michael, Liz, Clare as well as Auna Kirk, Tracy Willert and Mike Willert whom Albert also recognized as "grandchildren". Albert's true family includes numerous people who shared special and loving relationships with him and Clarice. He is remembered by his family for his selfless devotion to family, friends, the Sacramento community, and the "Cabin". He was a scholar, educator, statesman, community leader and inspiration and mentor to many. He received degrees from Stanford University: B. A. with distinction and Phi Beta Kappa, M.A. and Phd. He was a teacher at Grant Union and Sacramento High Schools, Sacramento City College, World War II naval veteran, served as a California State Senator from 1958 to 1980, and later on the Los Rios Community College District board of trustees. Albert was a thoughtful person of principle, courage and humility. Over the years he helped many individuals and associations in need without expectation of reward or recognition. He took controversial stands on public issues as a matter of principle without regard to potential consequences to himself or his career. Albert's family wishes to acknowledge and thank his many friends who have been so loyal and supportive over these many years, to caretakers Ilia and Ana, and Kaiser Hospice for its kindness and assistance in his final days. A celebration of Albert's life will be held on Friday April 23, 2010 at 4:00 P. M. in the auditorium of Sacramento City College, 3835 Freeport Blvd., Sacramento, California 95822. Remembrances may sent to S.C.C. Foundation: Albert Rodda Memorial Fund at Sacramento City College or a charity of choice.

My first experience of writing to my state senator was sending a letter to Senator Rodda about an issue that I wanted him to vote on, and I received the most thoughtful and courteous response, thanking me for my interest in the legislation, explaining that he might not vote for it as I had asked, but that he would consider my input as he made his decision. A gentleman, a wonderful representative of the people of Sacramento, and an honest man. He was the exemplar of how to be a public servant. Rest in peace, Senator.

I fondly remember Prof. Rodda, who was my history professor at Sacramento City College in 1948. He was easily the best teacher that I encountered in my undergraduate days. He was also the kindest and sympathetic of all my teachers. Later on, I enjoyed observing his superb work as Senator from Sacramento. We all need more leaders who follow his progressive and pragmatic approach to government and have his primary regard for the good of the people. My deepest sympathy to Sen. Rodda's family, together with my prayers for their peace and strength in this time of mourning.

My deepest sympathy is extended to the Rodda Family and I pray for your strength during this time of your loss. It is with fondness and a smile that I remember attending political functions hosted by Sen. Rodda at his home. He always made everyone feel welcome with his down-to-earth nature and pleasant personality. Now he can share his wisdom on a higher level. Our State has lost an icon, but Heaven gained a special angel.
