Arline Sylvia Obituary

SYLVIA, Arline Kern
A Sacramento native, passed away after a short illness on September 12, 2005, at the age of 86. Mrs. Sylvia was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, William (Blackie). She will be greatly missed by her daughter, Karen (Steven) Suhr and son, Gerald (Sally) Sylvia; grandchildren, Erin & John Suhr and Justin Sylvia; and nephew, James Sylvia. Arline attended David Lubin Elementary School, Sacramento High School and Sacramento Junior College. After college she moved to Los Angeles where she was offered a secretarial position with dancer Ginger Rogers but preferred instead to return to Sacramento to marry William. Arline will always be remembered as a loving and caring woman who enjoyed life. In the 1960s she and several friends founded the State Ladies Investment Club; quite a new venture in those days. The club met monthly to enjoy lunch and plan new purchases. After her retirement from the State in 1980 Arline continued her penchant for investing and always read the business pages first. Arline was a avid Land Park golfer and delighted in the fact that she hit the ball straight "almost" every shot. Even after hip surgery she enjoyed her weekly walk around the golf course. Arline was a fiercely independent woman and lived on her own for 12 years after her husband entered a nursing home and then passed away. Her days were filled with vegetable gardening & pastry baking. She couldn't wait for the squash to ripen so she could bake her famous zucchini bread. Arline's true loves were her family, friends, neighbors, and pets. When her grandchildren were young she looked forward to babysitting and always made sure the cookie jar was stocked with homemade treats. Nana and Papa's house was always the favorite place to go. At holiday time Arline spent weeks making candy for her friends and neighbors - rocky road, divinity, and fudge were produced by the poundful. Arline's family would like to thank all of her many friends for their support and love. Their visits, calls, and cards were a tremendous comfort to her in her final days. We would also like to thank her doctor and friend Joi Barrett for being such a good listener and compassionate caregiver. Also, thank you to her doctors & nurses at Sutter General Hospital, 4 south. You were kind, gentle, and above all, caring. Private services will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sacramento SPCA, the American Red Cross, or a charity of donor's choice.
