Barbara Eckard Obituary

Barbara L. Eckard, born March 7, 1945, passed away on September 16, 2014 in Roseville. She was predeceased by her parents, Albina and John Maziarz, and her brother, Carl Maziarz. She is survived by her loving husband, Ralph Eckard; her brother, Al (Suzy) Mazur; her sister, Denise Maziarz; her niece, Lisa (Mitch) Armentrout and their two sons, Mark and Charlie; and her nephew, John Mazur, and his partner, Eric Kreutzkamp. Barbara was born in, and grew up in, a Polish neighborhood on the far south side of Chicago, West Pullman. She helped pay her way through college by earning her Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workmen of North America union card. Barbara met Ralph while a student at Illinois State University at Normal, Illinois. They married seven years later in September 1970. She taught Social Studies in Ohio and Illinois. Then, she taught high school subjects to servicemen and women in Frankfurt, Germany. She taught two years at International Schools in London. Barbara and Ralph moved to Sacramento when Barbara enrolled at McGeorge School of Law. Upon completing her law studies with distinction, Barbara became an attorney, for the State of California. She worked for the "obscure but powerful", state agency, Office of Administrative Law. When asked what she did she would merely say she "worked for the state." Barbara was an avid reader of mysteries. Over the last few years, she owned "If It Sings to You", a home sales business. She enjoyed brightening the days of friends and family with her hand made cards. Her warm heart, engaging smile, wide range of interests and penetrating analysis, interest and joy in talking with others, love of both individuals and ethnic communities, came alive in her many travels. She was well aware of how different her life was since she was born in America and not in the country of her grandparents. Winning the lottery of birthplace prompted her to give to the less fortunate. In lieu of flowers, please honor Barbara through supporting your local food bank, Wellspring, Doctors Without Borders, Shriners Hospital, or Loaves and Fishes. A celebration of Barbara will be held later.

Winning the lottery of birthplace prompted her to give to the less fortunate. People just don't say things like that in passing. Sadly, I never met you, second letter, or Carl, third letter, of the Maziarz alphabet, but I have come to know and love Denise, the fourth letter. You'll not be far from my thoughts on 07MAR15 and all I ask is that you help those you left behind, adjust as they celebrate your birthday the only way possible, with real, deliberate love.

I met Ralph and Barbara through their business, "If It Sings to You". Well, their beautiful polish dishes and jewelry did sing to me. I began visiting their home - it was fun shopping but more so it was fun visiting with both of them and listening to stories of travel and family. I am so sorry for your loss, Ralph. Barbara is a very special lady and I will miss her very much. Linda Warfield.

Dear Ralph – what a flood of memories were released when I read of Barb's passing: two hippies (you and Barb) in a campground in Skopje with an enviable jar of peanut butter on a table in front of the van and another set of hippies (us) trying to figure out how to approach with bread and honey in hand. An authentic traveling bond was formed and the wonderful European experiences just kept piling up. The loss you must be feeling is doubtlessly enormous. Be assured that in memory, Barb stands as a wonderful, intelligent, and above all, hysterically funny woman – in her presence I was constantly entertained. Although years and space have separated us, it's difficult not to smile when I think of Barb, vodka, and a certain trip through Poland. Archie, Mary, Alex and I share our offering of condolences to you and Barb's extended family. With much love, Penny

I did not know Barbara personally—I only knew her through Denise and her accounts of their time together. Her devotion to family and friends, her kindness and her caring nature were so apparent through Denise's stories about her wonderful sister (and her wonderful brother-in-law). I am truly sorry for your loss. You are in my prayers.

Dear Ralph and Denise …

Please accept my deepest and most profound sympathy. Barbara was an extraordinary person: thoughtful, caring, smart; and she shared the most fascinating stories, especially about family and many exciting travels.

Barbara was an incredibly supportive friend, too. I'll never forget her many kindnesses, sage advice and words of encouragement. She was truly special and I know that I'm just one of many who count themselves lucky and blessed to have known her. I will cherish my memories of Barbara forever.

Ralph and Denise … you are in my thoughts.

Witty, intelligent and engaging are the first personal thoughts that come to mind when I think of Barbara. Humble, and loyal to the point of not knowing how quantify it into words is my quandary now. Barbara's brother Carl was my best friend since 2nd grade. When Carl faced terminal cancer, Barbara and Ralph left their wonderful home in Roseville to live in Chicago for a year, nursing Carl until his last day. What a sister? What a brother Ralph is. And always there in voice and spirit Denise. The loyalty to Barb's Mom Albina was the same. My accolades for Barbara could go on endlessly. What a treasure to have known her. May Ralph and Denise take comfort in knowing how much Barbara impacted others so many years later here in Chicago.

I grieve for you and with you. This is a sad event for Sacramento and especially for the Loretto family. I so enjoyed Barbara. Some of my fondest memories of Loretto are of Barbara and Ralph and looked forward each year for the annual "Ralph and Barbara go to the Prom" pictures. My love and prayers to and for Ralph. May the good memories of Barbara's life with you help you to live through this sorrow. Jean Frye
