Benjamin Sargis Obituary

Benjamin William Sargis Jr.
September 20, 1945 - April 29, 2022
Sacramento, California - Benjamin William Sargis Jr. was born on September 20, 1945, in Sacramento, California and passed away with his family near on April 29, 2022.
Ben was born to Eleanor Angelina Sargis and Benjamin William Sargis Sr. and was the youngest of three children. He and sisters, Sharon and Geraldine, spent their early years in Land Park, where Ben became a staple in the community throughout his life.
Ben attended C.K. McClatchy High School where he graduated from in 1963. In 1965, Ben enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was a proud Vietnam Veteran, who served in the 101st Airborne Division from 1965 - 1968, and did two tours while serving. Shortly before his discharge, he was awarded the Bronze Star, which is the fourth highest award that you can receive.
Ben married Robin Evans in 1983, and they had a Daughter, Alexandra Katherine Sargis (Wessel), in 1984. Ben and Alexandra were inseparable, and remained that way up until his final days. He was also a proud Father-in-law to Joel Wessel and Grandfather to Hunter and Dominique Wessel.
Ben was larger than life; an unconventional soul who was a self proclaimed 'free spirit' â€" just his mere entrance into a room created a sort of electric spark that would travel to each corner and back. People would edge closer to him as he told a story, like moths to a flame, eager to hear more, while he fit into any situation with an extreme sense of ease. His laugh was BIG, REAL and insanely infectious and billowed across spaces and conversations and brought smiles to everyone's faces. "BE YOURSELF," was one of Ben's many, many mantras, and that he was - He was one-of-a-kind.
A celebration of life will be held at a later time.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to the American Cancer Society in Ben's name would be appreciated.

I'm so saddened by the list of Ben. His heart of gold, quick wit, larger than life presence, kindness and humor will be missed, but forever remain in our hearts and minds.

Thank you to whoever wrote the obituary. It did justice to Bene and captured his spirit and essence. He was a bright light and for all who knew him, even if for a brief period of time, their world is just a bit dimmer now that he´s gone.

My deepest sympathies for your loss of a great man... I grew up in the Northgate area of North Sacramento in the 60's and 70's. A lot of days were spent hanging out at the Rexall drugs at the shopping center. It was there I met Benny for the first time, he was delivering prescriptions for them in his 1968 Firebird. We would talk and at some point, he asked if I wanted to go along for deliveries. He had just gotten out of the Army and was having a great time.
Actually, in the last 6 months I had thought of him and wondered how he did in life. He made such an impression on me that I remembered him even after not seeing him for over 50 years...I wish we had reconnected

Alex and Robin: I'm SO, so sorry about Ben's passing. From that first day I met him (when he made me cry) when I worked at Discovery Video, to the many, many times he and I were the Saturday "day squad" at the video store, I'll always remember and treasure his quick wit, rich stories, and points of view we exchanged and shared.
Every so often over the past 15 or so years, I'd get a "Ben" surprise by running into him at the most random times---while eating lunch at La Bou, shopping at Raley's, or even at a stop sign on S. Land Park---plans or tasks would pause and we'd take that time to have a quick catch-up and laugh (well, TBT, he kinda scared my older son who was 4 or 5 years old when he met Ben during one of those chance run-ins...ha!).
He has been missed during these recent years when I haven't seen him yet wondered, "I wonder how Ben is doing," or my Dad would ask, "Have you run into or heard from Sargis lately?"...now sadly, we will miss him always here on earth, and send a hug to him up in the stars.
Hugs and deepest condolences to you and your family. May his laugh and legacy warm in your hearts always.
