Bruce WEISMAN Obituary

WEISMAN, Bruce Dean
Long time Alaskan resident, Bruce Dean Weisman died Saturday, May 1, 2010 due to complications of cancer. A Graveside Service will be held on Sunday, May 16, 2010 at 1:00 PM at EAST LAWN MEMORIAL PARK located at 4300 Folsom Blvd, Sacramento, CA 95819. Bruce was born on June 21, 1941 in Los Angeles, CA. He served in the Navy Seabees from 1960 to 1963. He was a self taught welder, and as he liked to say, a licensed cosmetologist. He owned Ornamental Iron and Welding and taught welding at Lake Tahoe, CA before arriving in Alaska in 1977. Here he was employed by Welding & Testing Institute of Alaska, VECO and CH2MHILL as an instructor, shop foreman, Certified Welder Inspector and Quality Assurance expert. He was also a member of BP's Emergency Response Team. Bruce was a Chairman for and 33 year member of the American Welding Society, Alaska Section 125, a member of the Porsche Club of Alaska and the Petroleum Club. Bruce was passionate about teaching his trade to others. He was a founding member of the Mat-Su Borough School District Welding Advisory Board. His involvement, dedication, and commitment was integral in the creation of a state art welding lab, a certification program for students, and summer welding and certifications classes for Alaskan teachers. Bruce is survived by his daughter Chelsea Doolittle of Reno; Nevada, brother Claude Weisman of Sacramento, CA; nephew Paul Weisman of Sacramento, CA; cousins: Malcolm Lubliner, of Richmond, CA; Bari Sue Cohen of Tampa, FL; and Heather Rabinowitz of Orlando, FL, and many close friends both near and far. In lieu of flowers, donations, in memory of Bruce Weisman, may be made to Mat-Su School Student District Welding Program, 501 N. Gulkana, Palmer, Alaska 99645.

I had the fortune of meeting Bruce in 2006, and I was always glad to spend time with him at various American Welding Society events. His passion to give back to the community (and in particular, to help students) should remain an inspiration to us all.

I first met Bruce in Vancouver in 1999. I enjoyed the privilege of his company at many AWS events and looked forward to seeing him on my first trip to Alaska. Alas, I was one day late. None the less, the times that I was with him were memorable. We truly lost one of the "good guys"!

I'm at a loss of words to express my sympathy with the families and friends of Bruce. I only knew him through passing as he'd drive by our house to get to his Wasilla shop, though every single time any of my family or I were outside, Bruce would always take the time and make the effort just to say hi and give a quick chat. We'd love seeing his truck drive by so that we could get a great heartfelt wave from him. I'm sad to hear of his passing but grateful to have gotten to know him in a small, but meaningful way. What a great guy.

I cannot come up with the words that I want to say! only that I loved you deeply. knowing that I will never again, hear your giant voice saying "Hey Kid", feel you reach out to hold my hand, or receive a short note on a post-it attached to an article about the Alaska wildlife, breaks my heart.
I will forever feel your loss in my life. I loved you more than you will ever know! If I could have done anything to be there today I would have!
Forever your daughter!

I've had the privelege of knowing Bruce for over 30 years. A dedicated partner in the welding field he excelled in. He loved Frank's Diner here in Spokane and we always went there for breakfast when he visited and stayed in our home. His passing away so unxpectedly has influenced my life (I knew his hopes and dreams) as much as he did while living! So long bud! I will always remember.

Bruce was truly one of the "good guys". He was passionate about his work, always sharing his knowledge with anyone who asked and just as passionate about sharing that knowledge with the next generation. I will always remember his stories.

What a wonderful man and a horrible loss to all those who knew him! We worked on many projects together over the years and his expertise and knowledge of welding and the oilfield industry was inspiring and invaluable! I'm really going to miss seeing him pop up on new projects with that little grin and "geddy-up" in his step!

Although I only met Bruce on two occassions through AWS meetings, he left a lasting impression on me. I could tell that he was passionate about his trade ... and he had many great stories to tell. He will be dearly missed by all that knew him.

Bruce was the landlord of our friends across the lake, but soon became more than that. He was definately a member of the family. The thing we will remember most about Bruce was that his focus was to make a difference in the lives of those around him. The Bruce Weisman that we knew was a charitable and honorable man, with a willing shoulder to lean on. When his adopted family lost their child, he grieved as deeply as any grandfather, assisting the family in whatever way he was able. His loving and giving heart, his quiet respect - these are the qualities we saw in Bruce. We will miss him.

In behalf of all members of the American Welding Society and in particular the members of District 19 (Oregon, Washington, Alaska and SW Canada) I want to extend my thanks to Bruce for his dedication to the Welding Industry. His wise council and sage advice provided a steady hand to the Anchorage section for many years. Each year when the District gathered for the annual conference I found myself looking forward to his grumpy attitude tempered with a hint of mischief. He will be missed.

Bruce had a huge impact on my life. He was my Alaska Grandpa. He taught me a lot about right and wrong and making good decisions. We had a lot in common. We spent many days in the shop working on projects, cars, welding, and telling stories. He always told me to not find the things that I couldn't live without but to find the things that I could live with. I am definatly not ready to live without him. The time we had together I will never forget. I love you and I will miss you.

While we both were working for VECO, Bruce would stop by to chat for a few minutes on a regular basis. Although I knew very little about the world of welding, I often thought that I would want Bruce on my team when it came to matters of welding. We would run into each other once in a while at a restuarant out in Chugiak, and Bruce would always be wearing his trademark baseball cap. The conversations with Bruce were always pleasurable. I have not seen Bruce for a couple of years and was saddened to learn of his passing yet very grateful for having known him in a small way. He was a very decent man.
