Christopher Ahern Lee

May 19, 1943 - January 17, 2025

Walnut Grove, California - Chris passed away at 81 after a courageous battle from a stroke.

Chris was born in Palo Alto, California and raised in Long Beach where he attended St. Anthony and St. Barnabas Grammar Schools, and served as an altar boy. He graduated St. Anthony High School in 1961 where he sang in the Glee Club and was editor of the high school newspaper. As an Explorer Scout, Chris was a member of the Tribe of Tahquitz and an awarded Native American five hoop dancer in full Native dress. During the summer after his senior year of high school, Chris rode his bicycle from California to Massachusetts. Chris attended Long Beach City College for one year until he enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1962. He attained the rank of Corpsman and sailed in the Northeastern Pacific on the Dexter. After his service in the Coast Guard, Chris spent a summer at the University of Uppsala in Sweden. Upon returning home, Chris received a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Long Beach State University where he was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity, a Student Senator, a columnist for the college newspaper, and President of the Young Republican Club. After college, Chris received his law degree from the University of San Diego School of Law in 1968 where he was editor of the Law School newspaper. He became licensed as California attorney and practiced law for 55 years until he retired in 2024.

After law school, Chris moved to Northern California and took a job with the California Legislature. In 1970 he went to work as Deputy District Attorney for Sacramento County through 1974. Chris then joined the law firm of Mull and Mull where a case took him to Walnut Grove. While there he fell in love with the Delta and opened a general trial practice in 1975. He simultaneously maintained an office in Sacramento, and at times in San Diego to represent the Teamsters Union. In his career Chris tried over 240 jury trials and hundreds of court trials. Jan Kuykendall served as Chris' long-term legal assistant.

Having represented farmers for years, Chris and his wife Phyllis started an orchard of pears and cherries from open ground, becoming one of the first growers of cherries in the Delta. Chris and Phyllis enjoyed tending to their rose garden, boasting of their 'Lucille Ball' roses, and entertaining in their 1906 Queen Anne home. With his love of talk radio, Chris hosted a legal talk show and was instrumental in steering Rush Limbaugh towards KFBK. Chris and Phyllis enjoyed traveling with Rush to several countries and on many cruises.

As a devout Catholic, Chris served as an Usher and Lector for over 40 years at St. Anthony Church, and a Lector at St. Joseph Church. He developed a lasting friendship with Father Dan Madigan which included traveling abroad together. Chris served on the Sacramento County Farm Bureau, Reclamation District 556, and the Walnut Grove Fire Protection District.

Chris is survived by his stepsons, Kenneth Hubbard (Richter Elser) and Brad Hubbard (Katie), step-grandchildren McKenna and Delaney Hubbard; his siblings, Deborah Dignan (Jack), Susan Hoffman (late Robert), Prudence Lee (John Ahl), Jennifer Lee and Jonathan Lee (Christene); his nieces and nephews, Martin Boutot (Beng), Molly Hervey (Ryan), Casey Dignan (Debbie), Kelly Dignan (Angie), Brennan Dignan (Lindsey), Sean Dignan (Carol Novosel), James Dignan (Simona), Erin Dignan, Jack Dignan Jr., Jon Hoffman (Christy), Kyle Hoffman (Cheri), Regan Wilda (Jake), Elizabeth Lee (Chris Dang), and Michael Lee. Chris is also survived by Megan Lee. Chris was preceded in death by his wife Phyllis Fox Lee, his parents, Elinor and Harry Lee, and his nephew, Patrick Lee.

The family would like to thank his loyal caregivers at Later Years Senior Home.

Chris was an avid supporter of Friends of Vinh Son Orphanages and St. Anthony Catholic Church.

I just heard about this and am so heartbroken. I enjoyed working with Chris for the 16 plus years as his legal assistant and office manager. Phyllis and he were friends and I loved them both dearly. They are together again now and may they both rest in peace. My prayers and condolences to his family.

Chris and I attended the same high school, St. Anthony's in Long Beach, California. We remained friends throughout his life. I did not know he had passed until now. To his siblings, stepchildren, and all who knew him ... he led a vibrant life, accomplished much, and helped many. Rest in peace. I am sure you will watch over us from heaven and defend us in God's courtroom. Well done, my friend.

I introduced Phyllis and Chris when she was working for me at the REAL ESTATE MART. She sold his home in Campos Commons around 1975.
Chris was a wonderful and great husband. He was my attorney on two cases and without a doubt the best that I ever known. Chris will go down as one of my best friends that I was privileged to know. Karen and I had him over to our boat over the years for dinner or just a good visit and some tall tales along with a cigar and a cocktail or two.

Reading his obituary, I was so in awe of so many things I didn't know about Chris's life. I wish we were smoking a cigar one more time so I could talk to him about some of things he did in his life before Walnut Grove. What a great man and to me, what a great friend. We will miss him - he left us too soon!
I recommend to all of you to buy an Apple watch or some other type of devise. When you fall it will send a signal out and 911 will know where you are.

I met Chris over 30 years ago while I was working as a Deputy Sheriff in the Delta. Chris was coined the phrase by other Deputies as the mouth of the South, the official spokesperson for the Delta.

Chris and I became instant friends, if you were in his inter-circle of friends, you were a made man. Chris was a practical joker, enjoyed tomfoolery and shenanigans. Chris was not only a great friend, he was also my mentor and my legal counsel.

Chris was a devout catholic and a loving husband to Phyllis who preceded him. Chris was heavily into politics and stood fast in what was right. Chris one time placed billboards on I-5 which gained attention by the local media. Oh, many memories with Chris. Chris was that friend if you hadn´t seen for months, you would pick up where you left from.
You would find him at the social club Giusti´s before it burned down or at Tony´s.

I can honestly say I´m a better person for knowing Chris. He will be missed.

Goodbye Chris,
We were deeply saddened by this news.
Knowing you for these many years has been a sincere pleasure. Through the good times and the low times you were always a thinker and a leader, smart, and sensitive. You were a huge shoulder for the Church, a voice for the Court, and a friend to all who needed it. Let's not leave out an advocate for justice, and a voice of reason. Your advice and friendship will be missed and by many.

You had a great life my friend, you've had your share of wine, dined at the finest, dined with the finest, and seen all the rest. It has been a great 56 years, old buddy, I will miss you every day.
Say, since your a good orator, maybe you can put in a good word for the rest of us, if you can't work it out for mankind, select a friend or two, just a suggestion.

See you in a few Christopher.

Chris was a wonderful and spectacular cousin. We stayed in touch over the years and we were saddened by Phyllis´ passing.
Chris was a truly gifted orator and although he never appeared before me in Mass. I am sure the legal community would have been awed by his courtroom presence.
As a cousin transcending many miles from Chris´ practice I still marveled at all he was able to accomplish. He was an inspirational and entertaining leader.

To All the Lees,
Chris, was a larger than life guy. He was fun to be with. I remember his visit to Fall River. He expressed an interest in dating a friend of mine, Mary Jane Collins. She was willing to take a chance and her father put a condition on the date - that Chris shave his beard. Chris did that and put his whiskers in an envelope which he presented to Mary Jane's father. I had the chance to see him and spend time with him 8 years ago when Debbie and I traveled to Walnut Grove. That was a memorable visit with Chris cooking meals for all of us and taking Deb and I to visit his friends. I know it must be hard to imagine him being still but you all have amazing memories of Chris to comfort you.
Please accept my deepest sympathy. Love Carolyn
