Dave Kokus Obituary

Dave Kokus, retired State of California graphic artist and coordinator with the Department of Developmental Services (DDS) in Sacramento, died of a stroke on July 25, 2011. He was 76 years of age. His acclaimed watercolor paintings adorned and hung on the walls of the State Capitol Building during the first term of Governor Jerry Brown. They mostly featured California landscapes. Dave was on frequent loan to several other departments during State service, including extensive travel to UCLA and USC in Los Angeles, where he created displays on health services and innovations. Dave began his State of California employment with the Alcohol & Drug Abuse unit. Dave also worked for other California governors including Ronald Reagan and George Deukmejian. When Governor Reagan became President of the United States, he asked Dave to accompany him to Washington, D.C. Dave chose to continue his State employment and continue to be of great help assisting his elderly parents and special needs sister Audrey, who lived in Forestville near the Russian River. Dave was also accepted as a member of the California Fine Arts Society in San Francisco, in acknowledgement of his watercolor paintings. Dave Kokus had one of his political satire cartoons accepted by The National Press Club for hanging in their downtown Gallery of Honor located in their Press building in Washington D.C. It featured Governor Jerry Brown in a monk's robe. Survivors include his sister Audrey Kokus in Santa Rosa, John and Phyllis Kokus, brother and sister-in-law in Washington, D.C, and his beloved nieces Kim Palmer of New York state and Kelly D'Angelo of Washington, D.C. Dave's beloved cousins from Wisconsin Sue and Karsten Vollstedt will be holding a Burial Memorial Service for Dave which will take place at Pleasant Hills Memorial Park Cemetery, 1700 Pleasant Hill Road, Sebastopol, California, on November 7th, 2011 at 10 a.m.

Yes, a gentle spirit indeed. His family was dear to him. I knew Dave as a vacationer to his cabin "get away" in Twain Harte. A place he bought as a young man and held onto all his life. Here's to you my friend--eternal blessings to you Dave!

Dave was one of the very first people I met at ADP back in the 80's. What a welcoming, sensitive, caring guy. My condolences to the family. We'll miss you Dave. Rest in peace.

I knew Dave through Kathy Ross, his coworker. With Kathy, I took a calligraphy class from Dave in the mid-70s at the YWCA. Dave was a wonderful artist whose calligraphy and sho-card lettering was exquisite. I valued and appreciated his teaching skills and his beautiful work. Dave became my friend too. Kathy and I attended Dave's retirement and it was such a happy occasion filled with joy and many funny stories. I will always remember Dave the way he was on that day. Very happy, feeling very fulfilled with the wonderful career he had and surrounded by friends and family. To Dave's family, I am so sorry for your loss.

I had the privilege and pleasure of working in the Graphics unit at Health Servies in the next cubicle from Dave. He was a great teacher, mentor, and friend, with a great artistic gift, sense of humor, and love for others,--Kathy Ross

Dear dear Dave, what a nice person and friend from the good ole days at ADP and DDS. The kind person who I remember leaving food on top of homeless people's cars. Not another one like you.

Daddy Dave. Thank you for your kindness. Your soft voice. Your patience with we that begged for your attention, only because it felt so good. Bless you, and thank you for sharing so many days with us throughout my young life. The world is more beautiful because you were here.
