David Allen Obituary

David Allen
April 24, 1931 - November 11, 2020
Carmichael, California -
David Allen passed away peacefully at home on November 11, 2020 at the age of 89. He was born in Washington where he met and married his high school sweetheart, Roberta before moving to California. After serving our country during the Korean War, he started the Contact Lens Center of Sacramento. Both he and Roberta were early and active members of Arden Christian Church. He was always there for those in need. His church community was there for him when he lost Roberta to cancer. A few years later he met Johanna Wren at church. The two were inseparable for the rest of his life. He was known as "The Two Dollar Man of Carmichael" because he would encourage the young to be good helpers by rewarding them with two dollar bills. He made many happy with his infectious smile, clever riddles, and funny stories. He is survived by Johanna, daughters Debbi and Cathy, sons in law Alan and Jeffrey, grandchildren Ben, Jaclyn, Jason, Bethany, Spencer, Katie, Jessica, Clayton and great grandchildren Josephine and Evelyn. Due to the pandemic, the family is planning a celebration of life for David next year.

Today I was reading a newspaper article about the Wimpy Burger restaurant and it reminded me of Dr. Allen (we always called him 'Doctor' even though I know he wasn't an MD). My entire family wore good ol' hard contacts from the mid-1960s onward. We lived in Davis at the time and would make the trip to The Contact Lens Center in Sacramento to get our lenses cleaned and polished, or replaced, as needed. He was the best and I visited every couple of years for decades. Anyway, was just thinking of him.

I am Debbi's sister-in-law and knew David for years. I remember him wearing red and green contact lenses during Christmas. Very special in my book.

It was always such a pleasure to visit with David while in my contact lens days back in the 1960's. He was always upbeat and had a fabulous sense of humor. So glad he was a part of my life.
