David Fleming Obituary

David Morgan Fleming

October 17, 1937 - June 4, 2024

Davis, California - David Morgan Fleming was born in Memphis, Tennessee, the son of Ollie M. Fleming and Henry David Fleming. A long-time resident of Davis, he died peacefully at his home in the care of his family, friends and caregivers. He was 86 and had completed 6 years of treatment for follicular lymphoma which unexpectedly returned.

David was a graduate of Treadwell High in Memphis and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. After participating in the ROTC in college he served for two years in the US Air Force, including a year experiencing arctic life in Thule, Greenland.

After his honorable discharge in California, David obtained his Masters degree from Chico State University. Working as an Environmental planner, he led the State of California Telecommuting Pilot Program (later called Telework) for both at-home and satellite-office workplaces. The State-adopted telework program allowed California workers to continue services during the COVID pandemic.

David, an Eagle Scout, greatly enjoyed attending and working at Camp Kia Kima in Arkansas. As an adult he wanted to pass his Kia Kima camp experience on to new generations. Traveling twice a year to Arkansas, he founded the non-profit Old Kia Kima Restoration Association (OKKRA). Kia Kima members rebuilt the abandoned camp on the banks of the Spring River near Hardy, Arkansas in the Ozark Mountains. Today the restored camp is in the care of Kia Kima volunteers and is open, inclusive and free to applying youth groups.

In later years, David was a founding member of Unity Center of Davis, which became Unity of Davis on Zoom during the Pandemic. There he had many friends who saw him through his time of hospice care and who held a beautiful celebration of his life on their Virtual Meeting site, including the poetry and music he cherished.

David loved nature and wildlife and many outdoor activities, especially hiking, jogging and golfing (including a hole-in-one). David was known for his friendly and courteous ways, his sense of humor, his quiet laughter and his dedication to causes that better our lives. David had many friends from all walks of life and from his telework consulting in the US and abroad. He is truly missed.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Ollie Morgan Kayser and Henry David Fleming, and his sisters, Shirley Reams Rhodes and Wilma Bridgewater. He is survived by his wife Lis Larsen Fleming, his daughter Tova Fleming, and numerous relatives across the country. His Davis family included many adopted dogs and cats needing homes.

In his memory, donations may be made to OKKRA. www.oldkiakima.org or to Yolo Cares Hospice. http://yolocares.org/hospice.

I had the great honor and privilege of working with David Fleming and, most importantly, to call him friend. For well over 20 years after we no longer worked together, David and five of us former colleagues continued to meet monthly for lunch, as schedules allowed.
He was a very humble person and a true visionary. David was called a "Change Agent" because of the important and innovative work he achieved regarding Telecommuting for the State of California.
He always spoke about his family with a lot of love and pride and was also very proud of the work he and fellow volunteers accomplished after he founded Old Kia Kima Restoration Association.
David was among the kindest and most thoughtful people I knew, and had a great sense of humor too! Always the consummate gentleman, he had a quiet strength.
An amazing and compassionate person, David contributed so much to improving our world. As others here have said, we will never forget our dear friend and colleague. We really miss him.
My deepest condolences to his wife, Lis, and daughter, Tova.

We have so many fond memories of David. Larry and I, (Denese) were the founding Unity ministers of Unity Center of Davis. It was such a pleasure to work along side of David, who was always joyful and brought livety to everything. David was a vital part of that wonderful beginning and he served many years a Board of Trustee. Called himself VICE. Thank you Lis for letting us know. We will hold you all in prayer for comfort and Divine love to be felt through it all,
We send you our love and apprecciation!!!!

David and I became great friends from the moment he visited me in the early 1980s to talk about getting state employees to work out of their offices and at home part of the time each week. David was vital to managing the inception and development of telecommuting in state government. Without David I'm not sure that that program and many subsequent ones would have happened. He helped invent the future for many people around the world.
David and I also had much in common: we were both Eagle Scouts and served as Air Force officers, although a few years apart. I will truly miss him both as a colleague and a friend.

What can I share? David's obituary showed all of his many accomplishments and him as a man. I met David about 30 years ago at the State Department we both worked at, and became dear friends. Until his death, 5 of us met monthly for lunch to keep in touch, and to email often. He was a loyal, compassionate, loving, considerate, funny, friend, and I will miss him forever. Rita
