Dewitt Smith Obituary

Dewitt Clinton Smith

June 14, 1951 - February 13, 2025

Sacramento, California - Dewitt Clinton Smith was born in Montevideo, Minnesota on June 14, 1951 to Eugene & Lois Smith. He grew up on the family farm north of town. Graduating from Montevideo High School in 1969, he attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN & moved west to attend Sacramento State, earning an electrical engineering degree in 1973 & masters degree in 1998. He had a great passion for his engineering career.

He married his beloved Jane Larson in 1978, a marriage that lasted 45 years. They have two sons, Andrew & Paul.

Dewitt was an Eagle Scout, enjoyed the natural world, including a fascination with the natural watersheds throughout the nation, backpacking & hiking in the Sierra Nevada & Rocky Mountains & canoeing in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in northern Minnesota. He liked long conversations, especially about Jesus as his Savior, history of all kinds, discussing & debating politics. He loved books; as a boy on the farm, he was proud that he read every book in the Bookmobile that came out from the town library! He loved a vast variety of music, traveling, many road trips with his family & with Jane on two European tours with the Sacramento Choral Society & Orchestra, & spending time with his family and friends. Always a friendly smile. Always thoughtful. Always cheerful & positive. Always with infectious enthusiasm.

He was a devout Christian as was evident in every aspect of his life. Dewey was a wonderful, kind & caring soul and a mentor to many. He loved & adored his family.

He will be truly & sorely missed.

Dewitt passed away on February 13, 2025. He is survived by his wife, son Andrew (Macaela), his grandchildren Christopher & Benjamin who lovingly call him Papa Dewey, his brother Larry (Barb), sisters Jennifer (Lawrence) & Melissa (Russ), & many other relatives & friends. He was preceded in death by his son Paul, his parents & brothers-in-law Tom & Jim Larson & nephew Jesse Peterson.

A celebration of life will be held April 12, 2025 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church on Morse Ave at 1 p.m. Memorials may be sent to SOS Ministries, Hillsdale College or a charity of your choice.

My deepest condolences go to Dewey's wife Jane & his entire family. Dewey & I were in the same High School class of 1969. He was one of the good guys. I am sad about his passing. RIP my friend.

Dewey was just a good guy, one of the best. Passionate about work but not afraid to share his love for Jesus, our Savior. I am blessed to have known him. I love the beard!

I was so sad to hear of Dewey's death. I have many fond memories of our school years together and the many years of friendship between our parents and grandparents. I wish the entire family well and feel blessed to have known Dewey, along with his family.
