Dorothy MAPES Obituary

Dorothy Jayne Mapes, born on St. Patrick's Day, 1927 in Oakland, Calif, passed away on January 3, 2016 in Sacramento, Calif, at the age of 88. Jayne was one of four children born to Arthur Lester and Edith Burns. Jayne was raised in Oakland where she attended Holy Names High School and eventually San Jose State College, where she graduated in 1949 with a degree in Art. She was a member of Alpha Phi sorority. After graduation, she was employed with KPIX in San Francisco and later Kaiser Aluminum in Oakland. in 1957, Jayne married the love of her life, Joseph Mapes, a former Naval aviator, eventually settling in Sacramento to raise her family. Jayne was a vibrant woman with a passion and zest for life. Her childhood trips to LakeTahoe instilled in her an eternal love of the outdoors that would transcend throughout her life. She loved snow and water skiing, hiking, fishing and especially golf. She was an avid golfer and past member of Ancil Hoffman, Haggin Oaks, and Diamond Oaks golf courses. She also spent many memorable summers in the Sierras with family and friends at the family cabin at Bowman Lake. An accomplished cook, Jayne loved to entertain, hosting wonderful dinner parties for her closest friends and family, preparing all the delectable meals in a gourmet fashion. She was a dedicated volunteer at the American Cancer Society's Discovery Shop for many years, in addition to being a member of the Kingsley Art Club, River Park Garden Club, Over The Hill Book Club, and regular Bridge groups. Her U.C. Bridge group has been together since 1956. Jayne was a talented and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt, who will be missed dearly by all who knew her. Her greatest joy in life was her family. Jayne is survived by her sons Kristopher (Victoria Ramos) and granddaughter Aubrey, and James (Jennifer) both of Sacramento; brother Lester Burns (Denver, CO), dear cousin Barbara Ann Williams (Walnut Creek), brother-in-law William Veale (Orinda), and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Joseph William Mapes, and maternal twin, Patricia Veale, and sister Sally Burns. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held on Friday, January 22nd at 10:00 AM at Fremont Presbyterian Church, 5770 Carlson Drive, Sacramento, CA. A reception will immediately follow the ceremony. In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Cancer Society-Discover Shop on Marconi Avenue in Sacramento are encouraged.

Kris & Jim,
I loved your mom like my own. My fondest childhood memories are when she babysat my sister and me after school. Later she became a good friend and we had in common an interest in fine art. It's hard to express how comforting it was to renew my friendship with her when I moved back to River Park. I will always remember seeing her on her long walks through the neighborhood. I will miss her very much. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your families.

Jayne and I became friends in 1947 when we attended San Jose State. After graduating, we both sought employment in the Bay Area. I became Assistant Publicity Manager at KPIX/KSFO and when I resigned to become an independent producer for a local TV show, Jayne succeeded me, so we continued to work together. We married young men who were best friends and Jayne was my Maid of Honor. Our daughter is named for her. Our families were tied together for 69 years. I will miss her so much; life without her will be emptier.
