I have had no truer friend in my life. Gene, and a few others are the kind of friend who I could see every day or miss for years and the loyalty and comfort of that friendship never faltered. Til next time we meet... with much respect. I miss my friend and am honored to have spent life with such a kind and care free man who meant so much to many.

Gene had a huge influence on many people“s lives. More so than I will probably ever comprehend. As his little sister, he influenced every part of my life growing up and taught me many life lessons. I could never have asked for a better big brother. I miss him every day.

Gene was so many things to so many people. To me he was a friend and someone that loved and respected. He always had a smile on his face and open to a good conversation. He is sorely missed.

Alchemy is the science of mixing seemingly meaningless stuff together to produce gold. There is a time in a curious childhood when we all believe it possible and some of us try over and over to achieve the impossible.

The reason we believe it, is we experience it. Not by building gold from lead, but by mixing moments of time to produce something that is of far greater value. A life-long friend. If a great friendship can be built from meaningless snippets of time, of course gold can be built from lead. Any child can see that.

We treasure gold because it has an uncanny property, it never fades, rusts, or tarnishes. While other materials do fade if ignored, you can go years separated from a golden treasure and, when you visit it is like you never left. You can also visit every day and never wear it out. I have a precious few friends like that and Gene Farley is one.

It has taken over a month to write this.

Like gold, the only thing that can separate us from this kind of friendship is theft. Time steals friends. Cancer consumes time faster than normal life, and pancreatic cancer has a voracious appetite. It has been more than a month since Gene was taken. His celebration of life is next Friday. I am not ready and never will be, but already it has been longer that the amount of time he had left when the diagnosis came in early November.

My friend was a great part of my life for 38 years. Little moments of meaninglessness. A few big ones too. But I got to watch him craft his shop, Comics and Collectibles on Fruitridge , his childhood safe place that he bought in his early adulthood, into a safe place for generations of South Sacramento kids to study, play games, read, and create. His joy was complete in seeing that store continue as so much more than a comic shop.

At any time I could drop in on Gene and hear his joyful life serving a difficult part of our city. We could share some meaningless time and leave refreshed. He might tell me of the alchemy going on in his shop. Introduce me to a friend forged in that magical lab. Or we might laugh for the thousandth time at the same dumb scene in some movie, or celebrate how great his wife Pam Farley is, or Marvel at the people his kids, James and Erin, have become. That fleeting meaningless time, also moments of deep meaning and celebration, formed decades of golden friendship from nothing.

I have studied enough science to know that alchemy is only real within the power of billions of years inside massive stars released in supernovae. Maybe it is possible if we were to master nuclear fusion. Gene and I might even speculate together how possible that may be and create another golden moment were he still here. Gene was an alchemist, managing daily development of golden friendships in his store and home, where everyone was welcome at virtually any time. These were the labs where he made gold. As you might imagine, these were places of great power. I even have evidence his store could contain a Tardis.

I believe I will meet my friend again on the other side. He knew a life of doing his best and repentance for the few times he felt he fell short. We shared a similar faith in what exists on the other side and the one who intercedes for us when we fail. When we meet again, we will have proof the alchemy is real.

A very special alchemy, the rare mix that builds a life-long friend, is the highest purpose of that science. The science is combined with a mysterious art that sculpts, paints, and sings the permanence of an eternal friend on our hearts in a way that we treasure forever, even when treasuring it adds to the pain of loss.

I will miss my friend.

He meant a lot to many people, and a tremendous amount to me.
