July 2, 1975, 48 years ago today, Dr Smeloff and his team performed the 1,000th Open Heart Surgery at Sutter Memorial Hospital on a 13 year old boy with a VSD. That patient was me. I am alive and kicking because of the Good Doctor. I am saddened to find out I am unable to thank him in person.

My family lived next door to the Smeloffs in the early 1960s, when they were on Sierra Blvd. He was brilliant, but my clearest memory of him and his wife is of their incredible generosity of spirit. I remember that shortly after he got a brand new aqua marine convertible Lincoln Continental, he piled what seemed to me like every kid in the neighborhood into his new car, put the top down, and drove us at break neck speed down to the old Crest Theatre on K Street where he took us to see its a Mad, Mad, Mad World. And he laughed out loud. It is very important to teach kids to laugh and he was a great role model!
My sympathies to Ed, Chris, Jeff and Elizabeth--your parents were just the best.

I worked in the OR with Dr. Smeloff for about 15yrs. It was an honor to be part of his heart team! He was a great teacher and a neat person with a great sense of humor! I have many good memories of those years! My condolences to his family.

I have fond childhood memories of Dr. Smeloff and his family. My grandmother was employed with the family for many years and my mother worked with Dr. Smeloff at Sutter Memorial. My prayers are with the family at this time. Milton Macklin

Dear family,
Dr. Smeloff saved my mother's life after she received his Smeloff heart valve. My mother mentioned your father's name each time she described the special valve that kept her heart functioning correctly. She was amazed and in awe of his knowledge, talent, skill and compassion for his patients. My husband and I are both Registered Nurses and worked for Sutter. While I did not have the opportunity to personally work with Dr. Smelofff, I knew my mother was in the best of hands when she was treated by Dr. Smeloff. I hope you find some measure of comfort knowing that your father truly did God's work. He gave my mother 17 additional years of much better health allowing her to enjoy her family and for her growing addition of grandchildren to know and love her. My sister called me when she read this obituary and tribute to Dr. Smeloff. Please know he is in our prayers and my sisters and I wish to extend our heartfelt condolences to you in the passing of your father.

I had the pleasure of working in the O.R. with Dr. Smeloff from 1968 to 1980. He was a wonderful man,a great surgeon and absolute gentleman. All of us who had the opportunity to work with him will always have great everlasting memories of him.
