Eloise McLeod Obituary

McLEOD, Eloise Gries

May 20, 1914 -
Feb 24, 2007

Eloise McLeod was born in San Francisco and passed away in Sacramento at age 92. She and her late husband Angus McLeod lived in Berkeley, Utah, and Orinda, where they raised their three sons together. Eloise will be dearly missed by her sons and their wives, Donald (Susan), Robert (Deborah), and Barry (Sue); grandchildren Andrew, Elizabeth, Morgan, Jason, Caitlin, James, Julie, Janna, and Josef; great-granddaughter Genevieve; Eloises brother Robert, and many more family members and friends.

While living in the Bay Area, Eloise established and enjoyed mentoring the Dianas, a Miramonte High School girls' club, and she actively volunteered at the Lincoln Child Center. She had a lifelong passion for travel. During her years with Angus, the two enjoyed many trips around the country and a special cruise to Hawaii on the Lurline. After he passed away in 1967, she returned to college to study art and took several trips to Europe in pursuit of her newfound interest. She "commuted" from Orinda to Sacramento to help with accounting at her sons Refectory Restaurant. Eloise moved to Sacramento in 1984 to be closer to her family. She became active in the community, enthusiastically volunteering at the Crocker Art Museum for many years, where she was once recognized as Volunteer of the Year. A devoted supporter of the performing arts as well, she held season tickets to the Sacramento Ballet and Symphony, and often generously treated her family members. Because her father was a ships captain, traveling remained in her blood. She especially enjoyed cruises to Alaska, Russia, and Southeast Asia with friends. She was such a frequent passenger that she received flowers in her room and dined with the Captain on her last cruise though the Panama Canal. However, her favorite spot of all was the family vacation home at Lake Tahoe. Eloise lived independently into her 90s at Campus Commons here in Sacramento. Everyone who knew Eloise remembers her sense of style; she was never without her earrings.

The service to celebrate Eloise's life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 3, at Nicoletti, Culjis and Herberger Funeral Home, 5401 Folsom Blvd., in East Sacramento. Viewing will be before the service, between 10:00 and 11:00 AM. Remembrances may be made to Crocker Art Museum or to the League to Save Lake Tahoe.

I will always remember the visits with Eloise each summer as Christy Brower and I would make our way up to the cabin in Tahoe. We would stop and visit with Eloise, who was always happy to receive us. She would regal us with stories, and we would get a big smile from her as we complimented her on her shapely dancing legs.
My thoughts are with her family at this time.
